For the past 18 months or so, the final settlement figure has been reducing slower than part-ex value. For example, 18 moths ago, when I was first looking to change, there was only a £1500 difference between px value and settlement value. Just before VT-ing the car, this was over £3500. All the while, paying well over £500 per month. So it has been depreciating at that rate. Perhaps it would have fared better over the next few years, I don't doubt that. And as you say, warranty costs going forward wont have helped here. But there was such a large difference between what I'd get in PX value, and settling the account, that it made sense to VT when I did. I may have gotten back on track by the agreement end, but it might not have, so there was no real loss in VT-ing now. And what I saved in payments on the BMW that was barely getting used, and would just be handed back, would pay for the Edition 30.
Yeah, sure, I didn't need to mention the DB9. But I did look at a few, it was a serious consideration, then that happened at my work, so thought better of it, and went a different way for the next couple years. At the end of the day, a circa 2007 DB9 wouldn't have depreciated any more than the 5 series depreciated over its first 3 years (In fact, I would say more likely significantly less). So it would have cost roughly the same to run (taking into account warranty costs and increased servicing and fuel costs).
As for the explaining things in convoluted fashions, I merely said here that the Alhambra fit my needs to the extent that the 5 series went. It was then brought up about financing arrangement and such by other members, referring to posts from months ago.
Anyway, I'm done with the conversation. Everybody has different needs and uses for vehicles. I have explained my reasons for making the changes I have, not that it's anybodys business. But I do take some degree of offense to the accusation that I'm sort of of pauper, who despite paying the depreciation on a decent car, somehow can't afford the excess mileage, when the true reason is it simply made more financial sense to exit the vehicle in the way I did. Not that I NEEDED to, or WANTED to stay with the 5 series.
