The XJ is a lovely looking car both inside and out. The drive is excellent too and the handling is exceptional for a car of its size.
However, it's compromised by a few things that mean it's never sold in big numbers when compared to the s-class, 7-series, and A8.
1) Unless you have the LWB version, rear leg-room is awful. With me driving (5' 10") there is about 6" between the back of my seat and the front of the back seat.
2) The sharp handling means it's too firm and crashy for most customers of a car of this type.
3) The infotainment is just plain awful. Yes, the stereo is utterly fantastic but the nav and general UI is straight out of the early 2000s. It's slow, ugly, and missing key features.
4) Build quality isn't as good as the Germans. There are a few suspect materials in the cabin and some cheap-feeling switches.
However, I would absolutely buy mine again because of the way it makes me feel. It feels special and every drive is an event.
