The choice (ok they were given) of NASA astronauts and it don't get no cooler than that.

Yep it’s got solid history and I think the 78’s were first pace cars they did and absolutely best looking. I was gonna get an 80/81 as my favourite in looks but when this pace car was offered to me I could not say no and it’s the kind of car that could potentially go up in value as quite collectable.

Fantastic looking S2K. I need to get myself another one! Here's my turbo FN2, Chavy compared to a lot of cars on here but I like it. :)

One of my best friends dad bought a pace car years ago, I think a Corvette (I have just WhatsApp'd him to check but he lives down under). He was a race car engine builder and former champion Hot Rod racer well known in the 70's (I took his race car number for my race car) and built some really interesting engines. It would be fascinating if it was this car :)

About one chance in 6,500 :). Of course, there's much less than that in the UK.

If you speak to him ask him what his build number was. Literally just being through the interior tightening down all the Philips screws and padding anything that could rattle with old sponge and seem to have got most of the rattles.

Noticed the battery has no clamp not even sure if they are clamped down but be nice if it is possible to secure it down tight for now I’ve used a rubber block on top of battery and clipped the cover down should stop any movement, battery can’t really go anywhere I suppose as it’s in its own compartment behind the back seat.

Be nice to get more noise, do people in the USA just run them straight piped?

Also had the T-Tops off can’t wait take it for a drive with roof off, they come off and go on really easily which helps and to be honest considering it’s 43 years old found nothing scary on interior just clock don’t work gonna see if that’s fixable.

I do hope you get on with the car OK. Your desire and quest for perfection coupled with a 40+ year-old GM product may not necessarily make for good bedfellows.

Straight piping is likely to get a bit obnoxious I think. I have Flowmaster Delta 40s on the Firebird. They're a chambered rather than baffled design. These were claimed to have a loud outside sound while keeping some level of refinement from the cabin. I'm not so sure - it's pretty loud everywhere.

As I understand the clock is a well known point of failure, and because it's so common working ones are actually really valuable parts.

The Corvette V8 has a really nice burble rather than being loud. On the later Corvettes like you have, de-cat and fixing the super restricted exhaust is a good way to liberate a bit more power.

Yes I see your points,
I did spend last night in the garage going through the interior searching for rattles and then looking to cure them but I also enjoy trying to get a car to that perfection, of course on a 40 year old car it will be close to impossible but I can certainly improve upon where it is now. Funny the amount of philips screws that hold the interior together, but it does make it very easy to work on. Once the other garage is up and it will live up in the air for a while whilst I thoroughly go through the car and protect the underside though my quick look the car looks quite clean.

So far I have noticed one of the front lower lights is not working, bulb or wiring and the owner told me the gearbox has a weep which he provided the new seal for and the power steering has a leak which he provided all new hoses and a repair kit for, he never got to sorting these due to his back failing on him and so he has reached a point in his life due to health reasons he can no longer work on cars, as such he made the decision to sell it. But these are all jobs I can do, but in his ownership in the first couple of years he did a full brake refresh, new shocks all round, new tyres, new carb and tuning, oil changes and a lot of other stuff etc.

Off to Halfords later today, after seeing the thread where a guy was crushed by his Landrover I have purchased additional wheel chocks to make sure the car cannot go anywhere. Once warmer dry weather is here I look forward to both driving it and working on it.

Sounds like a hooptie!
