Show Us Your Motors!

Yawn. I don't need to drive one to know its not for me. Riding in one is enough to give a good idea of the experience.

You probably don't need to stick your wangle in a toaster to know its not for you, yknow? The video you watched was enough. :p

It all comes down to noise, vibrations, gears, non-linear power delivery. Its half of what I love about driving. Its why I don't understand the craze of EV converting classic cars. You're removing everything which made driving it an experience. I'd rather just not have the car at all.

You're contradicting yourself in your own post, the engine is half of what you love about driving but converting a classic car to an electric powertrain removes everything that make driving it an experience :p

What about the handling, nailing the braking point, hitting the apex of a corner, the styling, the wind through your hair/bald spot (in an open top car).

Pretty much everyone I know with an EV, I would classify as a car enthusiast, my friends with a Leaf that goes with 911, rebuilding an MX-5 to go with his M3P, Renault Zoe driver with a Boxster.......

Hope that you can convince someone to chuck you the keys to a fun EV, I think you'd be surprised.

I see your point but in some classic cars it is all about the engine.
Put it this way my C3 Corvette I do not think about braking points or hitting Apex or the handling even though its not actually terrible but its all about that smelly big noisy V8 up front and how the throttle pedal is almost a musical instrument.

Yes there is more to a car than just the engine but to a lot of petrol heads it starts at the engine, the rest is a bonus as to speak.
A Ferrari F8 or even 488 is a superior car in every aspect to a 458, faster, better brakes, better handling, more economy but I'd take the 458 every time, because the engine is truly epic and fair enough it is rather special, whereas the engine in 488/F8 is also in quite a lot of Ferrari's in various states of tune.

I've driven a few Hyrbrids now and also manage to get the keycard for a 2021 Model 3 Performance, and I am afraid I cannot associate the word fun with EV, well the first 5 minutes is fun but not in what makes a sports or super car fun anyway. Yes the first few times I mashed the go pedal made me laugh but after a few goes I was like is that all it has to offer? The steering has to be the worse I have ever felt in any car full stop, when I mentioned it the owner he checked his steering setting but it was in sport, tried the other two options, was even worse, this car had 20" wheels, maybe that is why but it felt so disconnected, owner even set powertrain to RWD, still not an ounce of feel. You could really make crazy progress and you could drive it very fast without knowing and also without anyone else knowing because it makes no engine noise. The instant torque was fun at first but five minutes later I just felt so what, what else does it offer and to me as someone who loves the joy of driving and the feedback and communication a car can give, well sorry Tesla yes fast, but to me boring. What I will say going for it I've seen the complaints about interior quality but it actually seemed OK to me and the amount of customisation is cool though the lack of buttons to adjust mirrors and having to do it via menus well that is just annoying. Buttons are good!

I get why people want them, because they make great commuters but they are not a fun car and most definitely are not a weekend fun car, they are absolutely a tool, a means of going from A to B, albeit very fast if one needs too and also the ability to more or less self drive, but fun am sorry I simply cannot associate the word fun with any car that feels so disconnected from what makes to me a car fun to drive which to me is steering feel, engine sound, changing gear whether that be a manual or an excellent DCT type box.

Truly the most horrible and thoroughly depressing post I've ever read on this sub-forum. Thanks.

You clearly don't like cars, so why do you post in here?
No idea what you own but the pinnacle of being a motoring enthusiast isn't parking an E43 on my drive. If I could easily get my hands on some crazy exotics without a load of rigmarole and summon a car for boring commuting journeys I'd be all over it.

Exotics are easy to get, either go rent one or walk into a dealership and buy one, no different really than buy a regular car, what is the load of rigmarole you talk about?

You kind of can summon cars right now, its called Uber, they just come with a human who wants money. :D

My experience is limited to renting ZipVans and reading 20,000 pages of damages logged in the log book to make sure I don't get screwed

Also the fact I'm having to spend all of my car budget on owning something because there isn't a viable alternative (even Uber has its limits) then j don't have budget to casually blow x£k on renting a 458 for the week(end).

EV doesn’t instantly mean Tesla. Check out the model S it uses an Evoque steering rack!

Also most modern cars are pretty emotionless regardless EV or not.

please don’t compare normal cars to exotica, nor scoff that supercars are easy to get. Not everyone on planet Earth has been quite as fortunate as you. :p

I did enjoy driving my Insight at the weekend, miss setting a car up for a corner or roundabout with the gear selection etc. Was a grind going to work though :D

When I think EV I think, low running costs. The instant response etc comes second. I don’t care if it’s fast or not, I want it to be as cheap as possible to maintain/run.

That’s why I am considering a full ev as the car after my hybrid but I haven’t found anything I really like atm.

Lots and lots of new EVs coming out this coming year including the Polestar 3, I think that ones going to be pretty epic.

I haven’t kept upto date with the new stuff coming out. Just more what’s out there in the market atm.

spot on, you just can't beat the sound of an engine, every time i drive my car i can't help smiling and i never get tired of it, it makes me feel like a kid again and i couldn't care less if it's only 6mpg or 22mpg (depending).

Electric car has no personality and a V8 Sound module won't work either because it's always the same sound tone, the only advantage the electric motor has is it's virtually 100% reliable compared to an engine that's starting to wear out and burn oil.

I am waiting on Porsche synthetic fuel, hoping that this will be an option for future icu cars?
I cannot see any future for me getting into ev's, they're either too expensive, not interesting enough or resemble a bread van...

Well, @pugheaven , you told me so... Timing chain guides broke off, chain slipped, quoted around 2k plus to fix :( Needless to say, the X5 is dead!

Had some luck though, the guy I bought if from, whom I had no grievance with and laid no responsibility for the car breaking, gave me a car! Not what I would have bought, but free is free :D

It's in immaculate condition, and I am immensely grateful.

Sorry to hear that buddy but yeah I did warn ya, worst V8 ever released in those things imho... but hey, you live and ya learn, was worth a punt anyway. So, Saab 95... epic car, I've owned two Saabs, fantastic cars, reliable, quick nice to be in and most importantly, it's rare and unusual. Looks in great condition matey, what mileage it on yet?

The badge has a small t next to the engine size, so it's the lpt with 185bhp. Will respond very nicely to a Noobtune though.

Problem is these only have a GT17 turbo and not the good old TD04HL which is a hardy unit. The GT17 isn't that reliable and whilst a remap will take him to 240ish BHP I would be worried about longevity. Saying that as long as the car has been maintained well then it shouldn't be a problem plus turbo cores are a couple of hundred quid and a couple of hours to swap out as it is a really easy engine to work on.

I was sooooo lucky, was a fun 3k miles, no regrets :p:D

The SAAB has a full service history, every stamp either a SAAB main dealer, or specialist, and 106k miles.

It's already had a gentle remap, so all I'll be doing with it is looking after it.

Some nice metal at the hotel:

cracking day at Silverstone and wow the 458 is epic levels good on track, feels properly light and so much power. Full GP layout so I was a bit of a noob as first time doing it but still managed just over 150mph on the straight. Steering feel and precision is superb and the noise beyond epic thought the 599 XX series cars are insane and there was three 2007 F1 cars running too and the noise OMG absolutely incredible but unfortunately one had a big off.

Epic hospitality as always by Ferrari, free food, great cars, free track day just a shame they don’t supply fuel too as the 458 absolutely drinks it on track talking 3-5mpg.
