Show Us Your Motors!

After 3 months, my 1967 MGB is back on the road. Full engine rebuild after a "simple" head gasket change.

On lifting the old head off, discovered that one piston was different to the others!

On stripping the engine down it was not only a different make, number of rings, weight etc to the other three but even a different volume!!!!

Bearings badly worn. Could have ended up being catastrophic if left for much longer.

So while the engine and gearbox was out.............

Had head gas ported and stage 2 converted with upgraded double springs and larger valves.
New slightly modded fast road HR270 camshaft
New bearings
Engine over bored slightly to 1845cc
Compression changed to 9.5:1
New lightweight followers and conrods
New set of forged pistons
Engine balanced
New upgraded discs brakes fitted and Spax suspension all round

By rough calcs engine should be giving out around 130ish bhp now which is ample for a car weighing 730kg giving me around 180bhp per tonne.

Got it back together ready for the show at Ushaw on Saturday at 6pm the evening before.

Sadly I have to break the engine in but first impressions are good. Pulls much much better than before, the handling is greatly improved and notice that it neow cruises at 70mph at only 3000 rpm (needed 4200 rpm before).

Cant wait for the break in period to be finished and I can go above 4,000 rpm again and then it will be on the rolling road for final tuning.

Somebody else's pictures of it at the show

How? Unless you've changed the gearbox/gear ratios/final drive/diff there's nothing there that could change the speed-to-RPM ratio. You've either misremembered or you've got something misreading somewhere along the way :)

Otherwise, looks excellent! I need to get myself some sort of classic sports car at some point just to enjoy tinkering again...

Took the car out to a mini meet-up on Sunday. It was all white to be fair...[dad joke overload]. In love with the way the evo drives now. It's a bit of a weapon whilst being the most stock-looking car there.

Pic spam with a half-arsed apology

Valid point!!!!!!!! Maybe after several months stood the rev counter isnt reading right anymore or I put something back together wrong lol

EDIT and more to the point, if my rev counter is reading low, I have been keeping it to below 4000 rpms on the rev counter. In reality that may well be 5,250 rpm. There is always something to fix. sigh.

After viewing several cars over the past month or 2 (i've posted about it quite a lot in this sub-forum) and changing my mind several times on what i wanted i've just bought this. This is a pic from the previous for sale ad, I need to clean it and take some more pics. It's a bit bland to look at imo it's probably its biggest negative for me but it makes up for it in other areas.

An MGB will do 70 at 3k with overdrive switched on, hopefully switched off in 1st/2nd or reverse otherwise it'll need rebuilding soon.

**edit just seen post above, lol.

Yeah I dont know where y brain went to! Was just trying to notice the differences from the engine upgrade and that was one I noticed so (wrongly) attributed it to the more powerful engine. My brain was going along the lines of "the engine has tonnes more power and torque hence obviously it is producing more power at any given rpm so hence it will now run at 70mph at 3000 rpm" . it made sense at the time in my head. lol :D

Need to go get better pictures but had a non stop weekend since picking it up... Traded in the 360 + a chunk of cash for a McLaren 650S and am absolutely loving it so far. The colour is unreal and even moreso when the sun hits it

Ex McLaren press car so has I believe every option ticked (outside of MSO bits anyway) carbon absolutely everywhere

Nice!

Good to see you've already got it out of Comfort mode :D The 650S has those settings linked to the traction control (they only became un-linked from the 675LT onwards) so be careful when and where you decide to use Track mode!

Honestly haven't played about with the settings too much yet beyond making sure I can feel a difference in the handling (Track feels horrendous on the potholed Oxfordshire roads I quickly tested it on lol). Have been with friends most of the time since getting the car, tonight heading up to Wheels on Wednesday which will be first propoer outing with it, sure as I get more comfortable I'll have more of a play.

I think had I come from my Noble to this it perhaps wouldn't have been quite as much of a shock in power/capability compared to coming from the 360 to it :D
