After 3 months, my 1967 MGB is back on the road. Full engine rebuild after a "simple" head gasket change.
On lifting the old head off, discovered that one piston was different to the others!
On stripping the engine down it was not only a different make, number of rings, weight etc to the other three but even a different volume!!!!
Bearings badly worn. Could have ended up being catastrophic if left for much longer.
So while the engine and gearbox was out.............
Had head gas ported and stage 2 converted with upgraded double springs and larger valves.
New slightly modded fast road HR270 camshaft
New bearings
Engine over bored slightly to 1845cc
Compression changed to 9.5:1
New lightweight followers and conrods
New set of forged pistons
Engine balanced
New upgraded discs brakes fitted and Spax suspension all round
By rough calcs engine should be giving out around 130ish bhp now which is ample for a car weighing 730kg giving me around 180bhp per tonne.
Got it back together ready for the show at Ushaw on Saturday at 6pm the evening before.
Sadly I have to break the engine in but first impressions are good. Pulls much much better than before, the handling is greatly improved and notice that it neow cruises at 70mph at only 3000 rpm (needed 4200 rpm before).
Cant wait for the break in period to be finished and I can go above 4,000 rpm again and then it will be on the rolling road for final tuning.
Somebody else's pictures of it at the show
