Well the plan was after moving the 458 was to not add anything else and continue reducing the fleet.

So much for that plan, lol!

I blame the Mrs as she was saying have you ever had an R8 and I was like I only like the manuals but they are always in boring colours and she was like but here is a purple one for sale.

Needless to say plan ruined and R8 purchased but no regrets so far it’s an Audi Exclusive spec car so purple velvet paint, R8 wingback buckets and extended leather with purple stitching and loads more options ticked including LED engine lights, superb condition having only done 29,000 miles.

It’s on PS4S and seems perfect Winter sports / supercar dependent what camp your in but it’s a joy to drive and I feel at the money I’ve paid an absolute steal and in a colour that is supposedly mega rare and on a wet country road drive today it was epic.

Surprised you went for a V8. I guess manual V10s are like rocking horse poo.

That’s a properly nice motor. Loving the pictures too :)

It’s on my shopping list at the moment. Just waiting for the right spec, which is really difficult :p

Thanks, I got lucky as I was looking at the cheapest S cars on the market and after talking to few people/dealers about cars with hardly any options I found one that had the essential Sports steering wheel, a few that I liked (Sports Chrono and 14 way seats) and was only missing cruise and sports exhaust which can be retrofitted and I used to get the price down a little. Cruise already fitted and Sports exhaust sometime never as Porsche are out of stock and keep pushing the part availability out month on month, some people have been waiting over 18 months now.

I am not looking for outright speed buddy, speed aside I find the V8 a more fun car to enjoy on the road as I can keep my right foot buried.
As such the bigger priority was always more about a rare colour and that is was a gen1 car, so if a V10 manual in purple had popped up then I'd have bought it, if there was a V8 and V10 both in purple and with manuals, I'd have gone for the V8.

Having driven Gallardo's, Huracan's and V10 R8's, capable yes, but with that speed and ability I found them really boring on the road, in short they became too fast and too capable at the expense of fun.

I can enjoy the V8, been the slower car means I can stretch its legs fully and actually enjoy it revving out, when I want speed thrills and handling perfection nothing rivals McLaren, but when I want to enjoy a more back to basics and engaging drive the R8, 360 and M2 really deliver here. :)

Over coming weeks / months it will be interesting to see how the R8 compares to the 360 and 4.7 V8 Vantage, obviously all my cars are manuals. Though it only takes minutes of driving to say the R8 and 360 manual gearboxes/clutches are absolute masterpieces, whereas the Aston clutch is too heavy and the gearbox not great, it takes time getting used too, once you do then its actually OK but the gated shifters on the R8 and 360 are the best out there.

Yeah I’ve heard they’re struggling to get them (PSE). Have also heard Norwich might have a couple in stock though.

Have you thought about a Carnewal exhaust to tide you over in the mean time?

It’s a (invisible) modification to the stock exhaust but sounds excellent.

Though I understand the switchable nature of PSE is the main benefit of it.

What are your thoughts on Sports Chrono?

Thanks, I'd seen that, not keen on spending £500 on a temporary fix and would rather wait. Not sure how true but I'd read somewhere that Porsche are legally required to supply spare parts for cars up to 10 years old so a couple of people were looking at the legal route to force the issue.

On Sports Chrono (Sports Pro button) I personally like the little clock though surprisingly to me many people don't (spot on the dash). In auto mode it holds on to the gears all the way to the red line though why you wouldn't be using the paddles I don't know. Launch control is nice to have but will probably only get used once or twice for giggles. My bum says the throttle response is a little better in Sports Pro compared to Sports but that could be a placebo. Makes the gear change more aggressive which I like when having fun but normal Sports is a big enough change on its own that it's good enough most of the time. I'm not sure how true this is as I only have two corners to compare but Sport the traction control kicked in very quickly (hardly any slip) and Sports Plus it allowed a little slip without feeling unsafe but I'd want to try again before I said that was the case. The big downside (apparently) is the active engine/gearbox (I forget which) mounts which can fail and cost £1500 in parts alone to fix but having owned an Aston Martin for 4 years that wasn't a cost that had me worried.

If I was buying I'd prefer a car with Sports Chrono but if it had all the other options I wanted I wouldn't hold out for it.

What he meant to say in the above post is that his missus liked the purple :D :D :D

Was not hard to convince me. :D

to be fair, r8s come in the most boring of colours.

most are all shades of grey/black and white. Purple etc is a good choice..

This, totally boring to me, it had to be an exclusive colour ideally like a purple velvet or monterrey green, just the exclusive colours are bonkers rare, I'd have probably settled for a red or blue but took no convincing once I was showed the purple one and the wingback buckets are also another rarity so to get those in an exclusive colour car with exclusive stitching to match, crazy odds. :)

Interesting - thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts :-)

It sounds like sports Chrono shouldn’t be a deal breaker, which is where my head was at already.

I definitely agree with your view on the sport exhaust. Hopefully Porsche can sort it soon. Not sure how they would even go about replacing it if it failed under warranty if they’re not able to source them.

Me too. I remember reading the below as I was seriously considering a R8 V10 or a F type SVR so was reading a lot of gibbos older posts.

Tbh the V8 does seem to get great review. Just got to watch for the power drop due to the valve deposits.

I'm not sure you can call any of these cars "slow" in the context of being a road car. Most of the speed limits are moving to 50 or lower nowadays.

I found it difficult to exploit and enjoy my M4 Comp (legally), never mind anything else...
