Is that a courtesy car whilst yours is in for a service?

No, I changed from the 3 series in march, wanted something a little smaller/sportier (hence the M sport)

Was going to clean it today untill it started heaving down :( ..... Love the Clio ^

A 116i, nothing special performance wise....( I wouldnt want the running costs weekly/monthly for anything bigger, sportier as in looks as my old car was an SE....it had all the specs I wanted and the small 1.6 engine....(yes only 1.6) quite gutless, but a significant saving on petrol compared to the 2.0lt, the style of the car was more important than performance to me....Some may slate me for that...but after having a mazda RX8....running costs and speed are the least of my priorities. I paid just over 12.5 for this...an 08 plate with 22k

What? Seriously?!

You realise it's LESS economical than the 118i, right?

Why would you spend a 5 figure sum and then get the 116i to save on weekly running costs?!

Lost for words, as usual.

I dont know who is worse, BMW for offering the 116i in M Sport form, or you for buying one!

then why am i saving money on petrol each month yet covering the same amount of miles? as usual nothing much lives upto your expectations, do you sometimes get a little jealous when people get new cars that you maybe cant afford, as pretty much any new car on here, you have something bad to say about it :p

Err, hang on - you do realise the 116i IS a 2.0, just a bit detuned?

Did you read what I said - unless you had a 118i before you are not saving money each month on petrol compared to having one now. And you might be 'saving money on petrol' buit how much extra have you spent to get the car?!

Why are you so obsessed with monthly cost and not interested in total ownership costs, which surely matter far more?

Because it's such an underpowered engine, the 116i is particularly difficult to drive in any sort of economical way. Even the official EU fuel consumption tests demonstrate that on the combined cycle, a 116i offers only 1mpg LESS than a 118i if its an 07 plate car - if its a 57 plate or newer, its slightly better, but again, only 1mpg more than a 118i. It's a hugely poor engine choice, its utterly unsuited for anything.

It offers nothing unique or worth having at all. It shouldnt even exist, its totally pointless.

Both of you guys ^ will know far more about cars than I shall ever know...my petrol bill a month used to cost arund 100 a month in the 318...its now gone to 70ish (this may fluctuate as did before) only time will tell...thats a big saving in my eyes ( maybe not in yours) It has all the spec and styling that I wanted aswell as being a smaller car....Its not your bank, not your money, therfor you have nothing to worry about do you :)

I gained money!..they gave me 14500 for my 318SE, it only had 14k miles on

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, quote of the year!

Yes, I think you bought a completely pointless car because I am jealous of it. That absolutely must be why.

Nothing to do with it just basically being completely crap, its because I envy you.

Totally awesome.

Oh, and look a few posts above to disprove your theory of me always criticising new cars - that Clio is fantastic.

You've just been suckered by a salesman tailering his spiel to fit your mindset of 'monthly cost matters'.

A big saving? It's 30 quid and you are driving a TWELVE THOUSAND POUND CAR?

The thing you are missing is that had you bought a 118i M Sport instead, you'd still be saving that same £30 a month - if not a little more, and you'd have a better all round car with a more suited engine.

A salesman certainly had nothing to do with it, and 30 quid a month? thats £360 a year saved, just on petrol :S If im not fussed about performance as in speed, what is your issue? If it isnt a juice gobbleing 130 or 330 etc, in your eyes, its useless and crap... oh well, youre most welcome to your opinion, so Ive no need to defend anything.

It's not about doing 100mph and winning races off the traffic lights.

If you have a car with an engine that is underpowered for the type of car, the outcome is not only that it'll be a bit slow. On many occasions, it'll need to be worked hard, harder than if you had a car with an engine that was more suited. A prime example of this is people who find something like a 0.8 litre Matiz is not as economical on the Motorway as, say, a 1.4 litre Fiesta.

It's also a more stressful drive - a lack of torque means you need more effort to do pretty much anything, and an obvious byproduct of having to work the car harder is that you will consume more fuel.

This is why when buying a car its important to match the engine to the car. Nobody is suggesting you should have gone and bought a 135i with 306bhp instead - if you dont need performance, great, avoid the performance variants.

But something like a 118i or even a 120i are not performance variants. They have a similar engine to the 116i - infact it's the same M43 unit only with different power outputs and capacity - but because the power is more suited to the car, its a more relaxing drive, you work it harder, and as a result...

.... they are more economical.

I've driven every single engine in the 1 Series range bar the 130i and the 135i and by far the worst was the 116i. It was simply diabolical and I'm not saying this simply because it didnt have the 230bhp I am used to. It was barely, if at all, fit for purpose. The marginally larger petrol engines were much better and in my experience were noticeably better on fuel as a result.

£30 a month in the context of buying and running a £12,000 car is not a large figure. If it *is* a large figure then its probably sensible to ask yourself what on earth you are doing with a £12,000 car in the first place when a £6000 car would do much to alleviete whatever financial position you've got yourself into where 30 quid at the end of the month is noticeable.

And then there is the other side of the financial coin - depreciation. The 116i is the runt of the litter. This is less of an issue when its newer as different types of people buy them new compared to when they are 3-8 years old on the used market. But as it gets older, and by the time you want to get rid of it, it'll be worth considerably less than a better engined model simply because very few people on the used market will want a 116i. You may find this ends up costing you more money than you've saved.

NEVER only look at the monthly cost of owning a car. It's a very, very flawed way of thinking.

And I'm sorry but to say you wanted something 'more sporty' and to then buy a 116i is second only in comedy to the idea that the reason I don't like your 116i is because I am jealous. Jealous? Of what?! The reason I don't currently have a car worth the same as your 116i is not financial, thats for sure!

If you read my post earlier tho....Sportier wasnt in context of being performance wise, It was more to do with the styling, anyway, youve no need to get on your high horse, I got more for my old car than what I paid for for this, saving more money each month, and have a car Im totally happy with, regards to what anyone else thinks. As I say your most welcome to criticise or anything you like.... And yes you are right, a cheap 6k car would have the exact same financial outcome as this, but I wanted the looks the BMW carry.
