That is really nice, but I don't think I could afford to run it.

I think you could. When I bought my 530i I couldnt afford a £15k car but I could afford to run a 530i. You CAN afford a £15k car, and the Type R is cheaper to run than a 530i.

Ergo, surely, you can afford to run a Type R :)

How does that work?

wut? :p

why does you being able to afford it mean he can? He may have different priorities...

I think I explained that? I didnt have £15k to spend on a car! He does, therefore he's better off than I was at the time :p

He's spent £15,000. Thats big money, that is. Generally people with tight financial priorities dont have £15k for cars.

Anyway it doesnt even matter, he's bought it now, people are just showing that he could have had the Type R he wanted.

I don't know how he bought the car, but if he bought the car outright with savings, then pays for the running costs on his income that would explain why he would not be able to surely? (I don't know if he did this just speculating pointlessly...)

There is no point endlessly going round and round this in circles, he has bought the car, but all he'd needed to have done was spend a little less on the car and use the savings for the extra costs - somebody found an 09 Type R for £700 less, for example.

An 09 Civic Type R is not a particularly expensive car to run, and if you are in the income situation whereby you can save up £15k then the running costs would not prove troubling :)

Whats the point in going over and over this and inventing silly scenarios? Why dont we just drop it?

What if the £15k came from the space aliens? What if his Mum bought the car? What if he paid in 2p peices? What if he earns £100k a year and paid for it out of 2 months salary? What if he is actually a small mouse from a field and doesnt have a car?

All we were doing is highting the often illogical purchase process whereby people obsess over the pennies before rushing out and spanking a huge amount of cash.

'Oooh, this one will cost £15 a week more in fuel, hmmm this one has cheaper tax... COOL! Here is £16k Mr Salesman'.

And you worry about what people post too much.

But thanks for the personal insult - much appreciated :)

Somebody else said he'd have had the Type R, I joined the ensuing conversation.

People in real life dont tend to come up to me and say 'Hey, I wanted a Civic Type R but i couldnt afford one so I spend £15,700 on something else', so it doesnt tend to become a problem off the internet, but thanks for the question ;)

Plus of course, in real life, people don't take pictures of their car and post them into the public domain for comments, either. It's something that'll come up in conversation.

Do you not find yourself wanting to interject sometimes? There are 2 women at work who sit near me about to buy cars - one has just ordered a brand new Volvo S40 and the other is about to order a brand new 207... part of me wants to explain the fail, part of me cant really be bothered

I have to restrain myself at work. Someone has just bought a brand new, poverty spec Ka on finance, whilst using the scrappage scheme. Someone else replaced their old car with a brand new Nissan Pixo. The fail knows no bounds in my work carpark :(

For some people thats what they want and thats how they do things. But the reason this guy confused me is that he admits he'd have preffered a Type R. He just doesnt think he could afford one when really, if he can afford a £16,000 car he can afford a Type-R - they start from £11k!

A shame, he is missing out on the car he really wanted through lack of thought, really :(

if she did scrappage they have some excellent deals on at the moment.

The fiance's mother got an s40 r-design for 15k

There is no fail, because not everyone is a 20 something year-old male from the internet. Besides, you bought a Saab, so you explaining the fail to them would be like me explaining the fail to you.

Meh, which would you rather have - a 1.6 diesel Volvo or a 210bhp Saab and £7500 in your pocket?
