Some of these photos make me really jealous:D
Do a lot of you work in datacenters or are these just 'typical' larger companies?

We only have one real rack of servers (most are virtual) plus two/three for switches.
Ahh, there is around 300 racks in the lab I will be spending some of my time :) Though, it is a networking company :p

Waiting to receive my access server in the post for home lab!

Switches are betting upgraded to Force 10s though which are supposed to be the wotsits apparently.

Tier 3 Data Cente :)

Thanks for thr comments from you and the others.
Might have to brush off the CV and look around.

Although, with larger companies i guess although the equipment may be more 'exciting' are the jobs generally more specific to just one area?

One thing being a smallish company I can and do get involved in virtually all aspects of our systems.

Actually the other way around here, we are smaller in numbers although not small enough to cause issues, just right amount I would think, makes it easy to handle work, and at the same time to get involved in many things but there are still tasks or system
That are are allocated to me that apart from one or two no one else can touch, and it's the same for me. But yeh because it's a smaller support team you find yourself in a diverse role.

Massive company here and yeah if in a techy role you're pretty specialised I think just due to the scale of things.

Have worked in infrastructure in smaller companies (where the 'dc' was a server room with about 5 or 6 racks) and you do get involved in a wider range of things.

Had a wander into one of the suites in the DC on this site the other day for the first time and it was pretty cool, lots of big black boxes everywhere :)

I don't even have a rack, I just have 2 ancient DL380 G3's on top of one another... Hoping to get some 1u servers soon and a half rack maybe put in the corner of the room. Can't post pics of where I work either, not allowed :(

Just redoing one of my ESXi Servers which will be providing NFS and iSCSI storage for my othe hosts.

AMD Athlon II 645
8 Gb Ram
Perc 6/i RAID card with 2x2tb RAID0 2x1tb RAID0 1x500gb and another 2tb
a 3tb drive is running off the onboard SATA as the Perc doesn't support disks over 2tb :(
Intel Pro/1000 PT Dual Port Gigabit NIC

Those SFF connectors are really irritating as they point straight up so I had to bend the SATA cables more than I'd like so that I could get the lid on. And it runs ridiculously hot (hence the extra fan) but I suppose they were designed to go in Poweredge rack servers so can't really complain.

Getting my ICYDOCK 5in3 hopefully tomorrow if not saturday :)

Yeah but in my 2950 at least there's no air flow where it's fitted. It sits near the front above the first two HDD bays so if anything it's going to get heat rising through it (formally fitted SAS pictured):

Nice build though, my big-box-o-disks is quite similar although I dropped a SAS 6 in it since I only need a RAID mirror for the OS:

Well in my 2950 and R710 the perc card is in the same place, but when the lid is on it still has airflow as the fans can move that much. I find the hottest part of my poweredge's is the bottom where the 2 power supplies sit.

I've got my rack now and am in the process of getting everything in it, first thing to go in was my CCTV system. Which is in, but needs all cameras wiring up. Rack itself is a HP 36u server rack, will house the 2 poweredges, looking for a rackmount ups to smooth the electric out and also looking for a shelf that mounts on all 4 corners to put the desktop in. Will try and get some pics tonight, but it looks a bit empty at the moment.

Must be at least another 1-2 racks full of those models, then dozens more elsewhere :p
All just 'spare' and not in use..

Think I'm going to sell my home lab and just throw together some Cisco 1841s and 3560s in the lab there :)

Nexus 5508s or are they the 2k series fabric extenders? <3 Fabric Path

Edit - based on rack size Id guess the 2k extenders

- GP
Nexus 2148T 1GB fabric extenders
I have 200 24 port Nortels stacked up in a room un-wanted.
Got to love spare equipment :)
