After initially leaning towards a sugo, I have now decided to go with a shuttle..
here is what i intend to order:

SD32G5 (£217.37)
Hauppauge WinTV Nova-t - TV - PCI (£45.82)

Logitech Cordless Rechargable Desktop Black/Silver Keyboard + Optical Mouse (£30.14)

2GB (2x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2 Dominator,DDR2 PC2-6400,240 Pins, NonECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12, EPP (£169.95)

Pioneer DVR-112BK Black 18x18 x12 RAM DVD±RW Dual Layer DVD Writer (Reduced Length) OEM (£22.19)

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300, Socket 775, 1.86 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, Allendale Core, 2MB Cache, Retail (£114.87)

Total £600.34

thinking i will hold off on a gfx card for now, but would be looking at a midrange card - 7950 or 7900.. something that the 250W PSU can handle as well as not take any extra slots.
will standard dvd writers fit or do you need special reduced height ones?
any tweaks or advise/ recommendations would be welcome and appreciated.

thanks
jon

Standard DVD writers fit just fine (onloy really need the reduced length ones if you go with the Sugo.)

You could trim the cost a little by using the standard Corsair 6400 memory at £140 ish inc VAT, the E4300 at £105 Inc VAT and using the Liteon 18x DVDrw at £20 inc VAT.

Would mean you could possible get the SD37P2 and a chaep GFX card

i would consider the the SD37P2 but I am not sure what the pros are other then the bigger PSU and extra sata. didnt think that was worth an extra £100, but if there is more to it then i would definitely swap.
do you have a mid range gfx card in mind that would cope with occasional gaming.
is the 4300 much slower then the 6300?

I put mine in my shuttle SD37,put the Bus at 9 x 325 and increased the voltage slightly and i am just under 3ghz.

as it has a lower initial bus speed and a higher multiplyer you can clock it with 'lesser' memory and still get excellent results.

Grrrrr, today OcUK took my order for a 6300 for my other SD37P2. Do they clock well too?

I've chosen the BFG GeForce 7600 GT for GFX but the 1950 PRO seems to be a highly regarded GFX card if you have a few quid more to spend.

Im really happy with my 37P running a E4300 and Vista, real easy to set up and runs pretty quietly.

37P
E4300
X1950 Pro (Sapphire 256MB)
Terratec dual tuner PCIE tv card
2GB 6400 RAM
2*320GB 7200.10's in RAID 0
Sata DVD RW
Vista Ultimate OEM
X360 HD-DVD (PowerDVD Ultra)

Cant recommend it highly enough - but certainly a lot more costly than the budget above (main thing about 37P is the higher PSU rating due to Crossfire compatability)

Looks damn smart too :D

okay how about this ...

Shuttle SD37P2 Mini Aluminium Barebone system for P4 Socket 775, 2xPCI-E, LAN, SATA, USB2, Firewire, 8ch. Audio, ATI Crossfire
Ready, DDR2, Dual Core and 64 BIT Ready. (BARSHUSD37P2) £256.00
Hauppauge WinTV Nova-t PCI Digital Terrestrial VCR model 909 (PTVHAUNOVAP) £27.50
Logitech Rechargable Cordless Desktop Keyboard & Mouse Black/Silver OEM PS2/USB (KEYLOGCDR*) £26.80
Intel CPU Core 2 Duo E4300 1.8GHz 800FSB LGA775 2MB cache Retail inc.Fan (3yr Manufacturers Warranty) (CPUIP4775E4300) £97.01
Corsair® 2024MB TwinX XMS2 6400 DDR2 Memory Kit (2 x 1024MB) (MEMCORTX20E64) £122.40
Lite-on LH-18A1P-488C 18x Black DVD+/-R/RW RAM oem (DVDLIT18A1PBK*) £16.58

£ 641.89

not too familiar with tv cards, is the terratec a better alternative?

The SD37P2 only has 2x PCI-e slots, so that tuner card will go nowhere :(
Your only choice for the SD37P2 is the Terratec PCI-e one I'm afraid (there are others, but the Terratec one is the best afaik)

oh crap.. thanks for that..
i really need to RTFM and while doing that realised it didnt have onboard graphics!
good thing you pointed it out or I would not have been a happy camper when it arrived.

what changes are in the newer revision?

I've read they are dropping xfire support [might even be renamed to sd39 not sure] and adding proper support for ddr800

also rumors of better audio chipset, but alas no official news from Shuttle at this time, apparently tho v2 revisions are filtering down to outlets

have a wander over to the relevant forums, I tried to post the name in a previous post to help someone out and the name was filtered out

ah ive heard about this SD39, well heard rumours

i know the place your talkin about, well theres 2 of them thinking about it. one begins with H the other begins with S

optical out on my 37P2 seems to be ok at the moment but only played one hd-dvd movie so far so hasnt really been tested - also its an old style av amp so wouldnt decode any newer formats which may be a reason to look into the 39 series - however its unlikely the new DD and DTS would be so quick to be updated on a built in audio chip (not impossible though)

Obviously if its about the same price or cheaper then Go For It without doubt but Im still very happy with my setup

currently there arnt any AV amps that can decode the new DD and DTS formats that i know of. i've seen a pic of a Denon amp that will but i dont know when its due out

woul dbe nice if the new shuttle supported it though :)

ended up buying the following:

1 x Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 Retail @ 110.00GBP
1 x Shuttle SD37P2 Socket 775 Barebone @ 300.80GBP
1 x Corsair Value Select 2x1GB PC3200 @ 159.74GBP
1 x Powercolor Radeon X1950 PRO Extreme @ 129.19GBP
1 x LiteOn LH-18A1P-488C 18x DVD-RW @ 22.27GBP
1 x USB keyboard & Mouse Black @ 9.34GBP
-----------------------------------------------------------------
