Sigma 35mm f1.4....?!!

There's no way I'll be parting with the 50 for this, I much prefer that focal length on FF. I'd most likely use the 35 more on the 7D, with occasional use on FF if I want something slightly wider.

Actually this thread has reminded me that I was underwhelmed with the 35L when I rented it over last Christmas. Realistically I'll be looking at other purchases before I replace my 35 f2, especially considering how much use it gets. I'll just keep putting money away towards a 5D3.

Roger over at Lens rentals is currently blogging his buying decisions. He's done some interesting lens/camera/resolution comparisons. It's all test lab stuff though, so be forewarned :)

For example the average MTF50 of a Canon 5D3 with 24-70 II is better than a D800e with the popular Tamron 24-70. We're not talking big numbers, but it's interesting reading...

He also later discounts Canon bodies by using purely test bench data (he goes graph happy!) against his requirements, which he says is interesting as having used Canon bodies in the field he knows they pretty much meet his needs. It's all good from a data point of view though.

It's £90 more in the UK, for that I get try it out in the shop and a 3 year UK guarantee... Decisions decisions...

Is this lens worth buying on a crop? Currently have a sony a57 with 35mm 1.8.

Well yeah, as long as you like the focal length. I'd also consider the Sigma 30mm f1.4 which is designed for a crop, I really liked mine when I had one. They are also bringing out an update to it as well, so could be even better. It will be cheaper than the 35 as well.

I'm thinking about buying this lens for family outdoor portraits, holiday shots and general walkabout photography.
Thoughts about this on an APS-C camera - wide enough?

Will it be on a 1.6 or 1.5 crop? Personally I'd look at the Sigma 30mm f1.4 if I was shooting APS-C only. Still a nice lens (update coming soon) and much cheaper.

Canon 1.6 so an effective view of of 56mm. I'm in no rush to buy so will see what is released over the next months.

My requirement is the best quality available for stunning photos of my family. I already have a 135L F2 and have just ordered a Sigma 8-16mm (indoors architecture etc)

Any reason you're not looking at full frame?

On Nikon I would go for the Nikon 35mm 1.8G, the sigma 30mm is no match optically at all, very soft in comparison and not very nice bokeh.

Edit, just seen SDK is on Canon.

Corners aren't great that's for sure, but I'd take the Sigma over the Nikon for Bokeh any day of the week. The outlining on the Nikon is nasty.

Bokeh is very smooth on my copy , not the best (there is some asymmetry) but looking at photos of the sigma 30mm diffidently better than that, and very high edge acuity form f/1.8 right o the corners.

It's well known for it's nervous Bokeh, it's still a good value lens though. I prefer the Sigma rendering, but then I shoot people mainly (wide open) so corners aren't an issue. If you want sharp across the frame and are stopping down, the Nikon is the one to go for.

I had a 24L as my only lens on my 30D for 18 months or so and I really liked that combo so I think 35mm may be a little long but it could still work. I hope that they are planning a wider version of the 40mm 2.8 pancake, 16mm or 24mm, as it looks like a really decent performer.

Yeah, I'd have liked the 24L but too pricey for me at present. That's another reason I like the 30mm, it's just a little wider on a crop. I'm not sure we'll see too much wider than 40mm as a pancake, apparently that'll be difficult to physically design for EF mount.

Nice shots mrk, they've helped me make a decision on buying one :) I'm going to sell my 50, as I reckon it can only be a matter of time that it's added to the art line.
