Sigma 50/1.4 Art

Why is it so much bigger than the other 50mm? It's huge!

To improve sharpness and aberrations you need a load more correcting elements.

It is kind of funny how small the old 50mm f/1.8s were and then you look at the Sigma and Otus 50/55mm f/1.4 and how supposedly primes are small and light!

This is the way DSLRs are going - if you want ultimate IQ then you end up with big lenses on big cameras. If you want a small system you go mirrorless and get something with a smaller sensor, e.g. m43. Loosing the mirror itself doesn't actually gain you much in itself, the Sony 50mm f/1.8 FE lens is almost as big as the sigma.
If you want small lenses you have to accept a loss in IQ and move to a smaller sensor with less corrected lenses.

Okay do this, take the hood off and look at it head on in front of you, say directly in front of your nose. What do you see :p

I might get one for the D800 when they come out in June although I can see a rush for them and then appearing on the used market quickly as people scratch the itch. If you can shoot some sunshine on the water to torture test the lens for aberrations.

I thought that about the 35mm, it never happened though!

Just ouy of interest,is there a particular chart or routine you use to test whether a lens needs MA? Want to try it out on a few lenses on my D610.

Shoot a ruler, or something with text at 45degree to the lens. Then adjust to suit.

Tripod, remote release to eliminate camera shake as this is normally done indoors so the light are low.

You can pick them up for sub £500 used now. Keep your eye on the photography forums, dealers and the Hong Kong dealers websites. People buy into the hype and realise it isn't for them.

I've got one... The 35mm was hardly seen at all on the forums second hand, and still is rare. At least for Canon.
