Sigma announce 18-35mm f1.8 lens...

This looks really interesting for me. I have the Canon 17-55 2.8 and was looking for something for better low light performance and bokeh. The Sigma 24mm sounded good but the bokeh doesn't look nice at all so I have been considering the 35mm 1.4 Art but worried it won't be versatile enough for wider shots on a crop.

This will probably be my next lens, but I barely ever shoot at f/1.8. I may be better off with the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 in this case, but basically having the 24, 35 and 50mm equivalent primes with f/1.8 (pretty much f/2.8 FF equivalent) in a single lens is certainly very tempting.

Think I will be picking up this lens next year, Fancy a 85mm 1.8 first.

85mm on crop is a head and shoulder portrait lens. Great results when you need it but a specialist lens. I like that kind of look when shooting people but otherwise it sits. In my cupboard collecting dust.

If I was on crop I would definitely own the sigma 18-35.

I do a lot of head and shoulder shots lol. Have the 35mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.8, want the set lol.

But yeah will be getting the sigma 18-35 either late this year or early next :) if funds allowed I'd have both now. Saying that, the 18-35 would be more useful on holiday wouldn't it?

Your saying I don't have the build mrk?

:p

It's a stark contrast against the 35mm I was using. But handling the whole camera seems fine and a proper 2 handed affair.

Depends what yu like to shoot on holiday TBH. The Sigma 18-35mm is pretty good travel lens, gives you all the wider primes in one lens. For me I would prefer the Nikon 16-85mm/Canon 15-85mm for travel. Lighter and smaller, more reach but importantly much wider. The latter for me is quite important, there is a big visual difference between 16mm and 18mm and I would feel like I would want to take an UWA 10-24mm in addition but with a 16-85 I find I can cope just about without to keep the bag size down. But you are around 3 stops slower so for for portraits or low light stuff the sigma is obviously ahead.

With the sigma what you might find is that you will want to swap frequently between it and a longer lens like a 70-200/300mm or just an 85mm f/1.8prime.

I'm still waiting for Sigma to announce a 14mm or 14-24mm Art lens. I have cash waiting dammit!

I use my 18-35mm for allsorts :) nice and sharp and the focal length gets quite a lot done despite being quite short.

Personally I can't imagine anywhere I'd use this lens

What is this focal length typically used for? Some kind of portrait?

It's not wide enough to be wide
And not long enough to be useful

I'd always use my 10-22 for wide
Of use my sigma 35mm f1.4 for the dog and stuff

I'd only swap my 35mm f1.4 sigma for it

I had similar thoughts at first I guess but the lens is deceptively flexible. It's not a big focal range but it's still 2-3 primes in one zoom and whilst it's not quite as fast, it's not far off which is a pretty good compromise. I just had a look to see how the 18-35mm compares to the 35mm F1.4 A and on a crop sensor, they're about as sharp as each other as it turns out according to the sharpness scores on dxomark.

I have a 10-22 but it rarely gets used these days and pretty much just sits in my bag. I carry my 18-35mm and my 100mm F2.8L pretty much all the time and I don't really miss having anything.

It really reinforces what a lot of people say, it's difficult to really use ultra wide properly and a lot of the time it's just not really necessary.
