Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

Been following this thread for quite a while now, after buying an Aeropress myself and looking at what Steve has recommended Bruce above, I've gone for exactly the same. Looking forward to trying to decent coffee for a change - I'm a sucker for Carte Noire! haha

^^^ I mustn't do anything Charleij :D i just like it. I know some supermarkets carry it but my question was more like has anyone found a cheaper place to source it, rather than paying £6 for a tin.

To be honest I've found that Lavazza red is pretty much on par with Illy (that meaning that they're both not great but will do if I can't get any decent coffee) :) Much cheaper.

Well while I've been loooking for other stuff on the various coffee related sites the only cheaper way I have seen of getting it involves buying 3 or more 1kg bags of beans or ground and can't see that being the best idea

Best Supermarket/High St emergency coffee I've been buying lately is fair trade Tanzanian beans from Sainsbury's. Can't see them on the Sainsbury's website but they are in a cream packet with a purple sticker. Beans aren't horribly over-roasted oily rubbish like the vile Cafe Direct stuff I picked up from Asda yesterday.

Think I've finally got the hang of the Aeropress. My first few attempts were ok, but today I got it approaching a perfect cup.
I just added a few extra beans into the grinder, 21g from initial 18g. Bit of a coarser grind, left it brewing for 1 minute as opposed to 30 seconds, and it's much better, a lot stronger.
It's a lot easier than I thought to make decent coffee at home. Really should have tried it sooner.

I've been sending a few emails back and forth with Steve from Hasbean, he reckoned as a newcomer to home brewing coffee, I'd be better off with an Aeropress and a Porlex grinder, so that's what I've ordered, along with a couple of his recommendations for coffee beans.
I really like the filter coffee from Mcdonalds (sorry lol), so I'm hoping the results from this kit will be as good, if not better.

Exactly the same route I went down, and I also used to like the McDonalds coffee... I think I can safely say you'll be happy with your choice :D

Well my first 4 attempts i was wondering what all the fuss was about..but now I've got it sussed, the last 3 tries have all been perfect. For sure better than Mcdonalds now lol.
It's fantastic having great coffee on tap at home, so glad I read through this thread last week.

I went for

63% Sumatran
32% Colombian
5% Brazilian

I will let people know how it tastes....

Brazilian is typically used as a base in a blend so just adding 5% to one, particularly with so much Sumatran, is going to contribute nothing. You might as well just go with 35% of the Columbian or Brazilian which I'm assuming you're adding to give the Sumatran a bit of a lift?

This is my new toy, just been delivered today...

I like it, looks kinda steampunky! :)

On another note, the inside of my vac pot is getting kinda brown from the coffee, and it's right at the bottom where i can't reach. And the opening is too narrow for me to fit a sponge or anything else through it. Well I could probably force a sponge in, but I couldn't be sure of getting it out! How do you folks clean yours?

would Pulycaff or similar work? i'm not sure about the Vac pots - could you get a pipe cleaner or decanter cleaning balls into the base to clean with? (ie: http://www.wineware.co.uk/Eisch+Decanter+Cleaning+Balls--943/1-details.htm)

K3V, how well does it work? it looks pretty good but maybe a little over-engineered and huge in comparison to the Porlux but from the sounds of it it has much better burrs... How much did it end up costing you delivered (if you don't mind us asking - its from the US isn't it?)
