Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

everything with matters about espresso coffee ,but in the end is like everything else, you need to hit some brick walls with your head, until you see the light:D

Ahh you don't need expensive things to taste great coffee. Read up about "cupping" which is the coffee tasting. Basically they get the roasted bean, grind it and then pure the grinds directly into a cup with hot water - just as tea. They then slurp the coffee to atomise the compounds so you get more smell, even spread of tasty liquid over the tongue.

1. Fresh coffee is the taste and the taste is what you want in the cup.
2. Grinder to release the taste
3. Machine to wash the taste from the grounds.

The Rocky is a very popular one, Ascaso is another alternative too at that price point. The MC2 etc are also good but as Raymond has pointed out - if you don't mind a minute of vicious exercise then the Zassenhaus, PePe etc are definitely worth exploring.

There's a lot of coffee equipment on 'the bay' too. Unwanted christmas pressies will appear shortly too..

I'm certainly not an expert, just lucky enough to own one..

OMG, i think i just made my first decent cup of espresso !

Using some fresh beans bought from Hasbean a week or so ago, freshly ground, properly tampered, extraction was the perfectly timed, the shot came out with lots of crema (like Guinness) and the ground afterwards was not soggy and with no hint of burnt smell (unlike the Starbucks variety). The espresso was smooth, rich and full of flavours.

Where have you been all my life !!! I am off to get some more beans !

An online place call Manufactum, they are in Germany and sell discontinued/classic stuff of yester-years.
I ordered one from there too, I was a little unsure about the payment by invoice until I saw that you had received yours, but hey it's their risk, right?

Did you get a shipping confirmation email? I ordered a few days ago and have heard nothing since.

I've just ordered some Australian Skyberry from Hasbean, so I hope the Zass turns up soon!

I didn't get a shipping confirmation email, i called them on the phone last Thursday and they told me it was shipped on Wednesday and I got it on Friday. I got it delivered to work and the invoice came 5 days later in my home address, it only has a bank account code and sort code on it of HSBC and thats it. You can pay by cheque, and i had to get that address off them by emailing them lol Very random way of doing business !

Cheers, I'm hoping it's on it's way now!

I'm using an aeropress at the moment, which is great (can't afford a Gaggia unfortunately:(); so far my favourite supermarket coffees have been the Lavazza red, and Tesco's Javan Sumatra. Looking forward to comparing freshly ground beans to pre-ground. I'm also looking at trying some of the Iapar 59 on NickK's advice earlier in the thread.

I've been called a coffee snob at work (just for using a French press), but I couldn't stomach the filth from the vending machine any longer!

I've seen nothing but favourable reviews so far, and it's very convenient to use. There's no coffee grounds in the cup, unlike the french press.

I've tried exactly the same coffee in my parent's old cheap Kenwood espresso maker, and I find the aeropress to give superior results. The Kenwood thingy is pretty basic however!

Hi NickK

can you please tell me if it´s possible to buy the filters ( single or double cup)for the Elektra , in any on-line shop?

I just discover they will fit my krups xp4000 ( they are 50 mm diameter like mine)- and that is all I need to make a great espresso:)
the original filter is "pressurized" and do not let to make a " real" espresso, like that guy does- he just uses a "unpressurised" filter and "voillá " great espresso out of the machine, eheh

i'm using zassenhauss to aeropress.

the aeropress gives much better results then a french press but in terms of making espresso please note

1. it will not produce crema
2. you have to use use twice the amount of coffee grind per cup to produce 'espresso' compared to a real espresso machine. (approx 14g instead of 7g)

the plus points is that its quick to use very easy to clean and the filters are reusable. it's also extremely portable. (i love producing fresh coffee in my ford transit during my working week)

I am thinking about purchasing a home espresso machine to produce real espresso with crema but I don't think i would use it enough to warrant the upkeep.
