Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

I picked up some more beans today from the local coffee shop were I got my aeropress and other start up gear from, it cost £10 for a 350g bag, sounds expensive to me.

Do you think it would be better to buy online at hasbean etc?

Squaremile beans are amongst my favourite roaster and I've had very few coffees from them that I don't like. However, they usually have less of a range than hasbean.

Also, in terms of pricing their bags are 350g, versus hasbean at 250g, which accounts for some of the difference in price.

I'd second this, they are slightly more expensive yet arguably the top (or one of the top) roasters in the UK.

You also get slightly more coffee so gram for gram its not bad... - infact its only £0.14 more than a 250g bag in real terms

Finally if you got that for £10 you got a bargain, its £12.50 direct from square mile... http://shop.squaremilecoffee.com/products/remera

It's coming up to that time of year again...

UKBC 2014.

Bit of a change this year. Instead of several heats all around the country, it's being consolidated into a single 'Superheat'

Sadly, it's in Birmingham... ;)

9th to the 12th of Feb at Millennium Point - more info here and here.

I'll be there for all 4 days, not sure what I'll be doing yet, but I'm travelling down on saturday morning so I can spend some time in Brum and take a look at the venue. Not been in Brum since I was at Uni in Coventry. Plus, I want to visit 6/8 Kafe. ;)

Top 20 *I believe it's still the top 20* will go through to the Semi's at the London Coffee Festival, and I'll be there as well. :D Obsessed? Perhaps. ;)

Anyone feel like coming along and giving some barista's some noisy support?

Awesome choice. I have the same setup and it can crank out great coffee once you get it adjusted and used to it :)

Can't wait, got a torrefacto blend ready and waiting :D Gonna go down to Sainsburys to get some cheap beans so I can adjust the grinder.

Does anyone know if the Classic comes with a tamper?

One thing to be careful of is that you'll have to readjust the grind when you change from older rubbish beans to newer ones. I'm not sure it's worth doing to be honest - you'll save perhaps one or two espresso runs worth of beans.

The Classic comes with a tamper but it's kind of cack. You can get by with it (you'll need to tamp each 'corner' of the basket though) but I'd recommend picking up something like a Motta tamper. I upgraded to it and it is much easier to use. There are probably better tampers if you want to spend loads of money but personally I find the Motta one to be more than sufficient.

Might have to try and make it to the london coffee festival this year (before moving up your way in the summer Flibster) - keep meaning to go but never seem to get the time :(

London Coffee Festival is usually pretty busy and also has some good stuff on. Still waiting for the Kickstarter for the Ikawa roaster. Really wanted one since I saw it for the first time at the first London Coffee Festival.

Plus there's the UKBC Semi's and Finals happening. Not sure what days they're happening on yet, but i'll be updating as and when.

Moving to Hertfordshire? You poor sod. ;) It's pretty barren for good coffee. There are a couple of places though.

Finally got some scales. Any quick tips for coffee/water ratios for clever dripper and aeropress.

My grinder spits out 22g of grounds on one press. Can adjust the timer on it though (iberital MC2)

Look what arrived in the post today :D

Was nice of HappyDonkey to give me some free coffee and shot glasses too :)

Set it up from this guide: http://www.coffeecrew.com/learning/255-gaggia-classic-step-by-step

Pulled 3 shots today after setting it up.. I had a little tinker with the MC2, screwing the grinder adjust knob round and round.. probably shouldn't have done that but I was seeing how much travel it has; seems to go on forever! I thought they didn't send a manual with it but after using it once I found one in the packaging.. it says there's reference strip on the plastic hopper but mine has none  Oh well, I think my grind is far too fine as from 25 secs I get about 1.6 oz (sorry why is a unit of mass used for measuring volume?).

Used the beans from HD and the result was just like having a generic espresso with milk from anywhere.. although with a lot more crema. Does the extraction time and coarseness affect taste dramatically? I'm obviously going to get some beans from hasbean and rave but i'm just experimenting with these beans :)

Fortunately my housemate is an experienced coffee 'enthusiast' but he's away for a week!

For my Aeropress, I use 17g of coffee (weighed before grinding), put it into the Aeropress, and then fill 3/4 full of water.
