Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

is that with a code - at checkout it wanted full price £24/Kg for rocko ?

Rave are just giving below- only so & trying to bully customers with brexit threat
**UPDATE**
You may have been wondering why we have only offered a 10% discount on this most voluminous of shopping days. The time is long overdue that we up our prices in line with the very significant rise in costs of coffee and production. We have held off as long as possible, providing you with the best value we possibly could. After much discussion we decided to hold off until after this weekend, while also offering the 10% discount on Single Origins - Which we will now extend through the weekend until close of play Monday the 28th (Use code BlackFriday16 for the duration of the weekend)

Hi Gents,
The wife is going to buy me a coffee machine for christmas.
I want one that has a milk steamer and that uses grounds. I don't want one that uses pods.
I don't think I need one with a bean grinder built in, I'd rather get a seperate grinder and put the money towards a better quality machine.
I like americano's but do have the occasional latte/cappucino. My wife likes lattes so think a steamer is a must.
Looking to spend £100-200.
I have read through the thread and peoples opinions seem to differ! Any suggestions on what to go for?

Beans > Grinder > Extraction (Person/Machine/pot)

Good fresh beans
Flat burr grinder (not blade or conical) so that the grind is consistent and doesn't heat the coffee.
Extraction is a combination of person's technique and machine/pot.

Gaggia is a well respected starter espresso machine and second hand ones will still last years.

you probably saw it , they had a complete thread on foundry coffee with contributions from themselves - ultimately did not get any because the thread suggested they were light roasted, but typically prefer a heavy roasted (ok maybe less subtle - but bigger traditional Italian flavour hit ?) - reviewers did suggest waiting a couple of weeks, post roast, before using.
... tell us how the Rocko works out

Well I got the Melitta TS for £710 and it's amazing! Now I'm just trying to find what coffee beans I like. Are there any good bundles that have a selection out there that I could buy to try?

Thanks

My Gaggia Classic is on it's last legs, I've flushed it a few times and descaled it.

Does anyone know of somewhere I can send it for a proper service? I have no idea whats wrong with it.

No problemo :) Try and rank them from best to worst and find out the tasting notes of the ones you preferred, it will help you with future selections.

I'm not aware of the machine you've bought, but think about what water you're using in it too.

Yea' that's a good idea mate! The machine is awesome and I love it, I'm glad I went down this route rather than trying to perfect the art I love the consistently good coffee it produces!

I believe my water would be soft, we distil all the water that comes in to the house, with the test strips I have it had 5 dots which should have changed based on the water but non did which was cool :D

Thanks mate

Drop in to the UK coffee forums, a chap on there called gaggiamanualservice is well rated. http://www.gaggiamanualservice.com/ check there or PM him through the forum.
The chaps names Mark, I bought my classic from him.

/\/\/\/\ I bought a bag at the London Coffee Festival in April this year, It was fine but I've drunk better blends this year. Probably down to my own individual taste & I may have let it rest for longer than I should've done.

Rave have put up prices by 17% so maybe looking for another supplier - they should have a deal like the energy suppliers fixed price 2018 etc ... so maybe looking for another supplier .

Square Mile Red Brick is labelled as a seasonal coffee so is a variable blend - no ? , currently described as "Tasting Notes APRICOT/ CARAMEL/ HAZELNUT/ SYRUPY"

rhysduck - you probably already did this, but if you posted your Gaggia's problem on the uk coffee forum someone will probably diagnose it for you (& cc OC's) - I had some v. helpful discussions.

Hm .. I would have said hasbean blends and Rave Blends eg. signature are pretty consistent in flavour throughout the year.

Q. wanted to do some bottomless portafilter shots, never got round to experimenting before - pre-warming the cups before is a pain though,
without the spout, or I need to get some wider brim cups ? or kettle

Similar flavour and profile, yes. Same bean? No. :)

HasBean denominate their changes - MK2 2016 MK3 2016 etc. Their Blake blend is MK7 2016! (they reset every year)

You can see on Square Mile the "recipe" they use and it changes as the seasons progress etc.
