Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

@Raymond Lin

I'm ashamed to say that I caved and ended up ordering a DF64 Gen 2 from Home Baristas (due any day now). I was close to ordering the Niche Zero but a random call with the owner of Home Baristas convinced me otherwise. I spoke with Anthony for close to half an hour, went through my shortlist, pros and cons of each etc. He has direct experience with a whole ranger of grinders up to and beyond £1k, including the Niche Zero and DF64 Gen 1/2. His recommendation was the DF64 for a whole variety of reasons which I won't bore you with. Excited for it to arrive now!

My £15 Amazon scales are on the verge of breaking so I need to order a replacement. Any recommendations beyond the list below?

Timemore Black Mirror (£41 Amazon)
MHW-3BOMBER Mini (£45 Amazon)
Timemore Black Mirror Basic 2 (£49 Dog & Hat)

Quite like the look of the MHW-3BOMBER Mini as it'll comfortably fit on the drip tray of my SBE. Charging port is also covered unlike the Black Mirror.

Fair enough, i look forward to your feed back on it:)

I picked up a used Niche Zero at the weekend, saving it for my birthday though :(

Also making my mind up on a machine, most likely to get an evo Gaggia classic at the moment. Does anyone here have one?

I have one, 2008 so it’s the older boiler one, similar to the current Pro version. It’s great for the money, the only nitpick is the temp surfing, you need to use it lots of figure out when to pull a shot. But anything else in this price range is similar or worse. I have to spend £1k+ to get worthwhile upgrade from it.

I’ve been tempted to get a pid whilst I’m at it but at least want to try it stock first.

Just got to decide what colour to go for :D

I hadn't bought anything on Ali since brexit + vat requirements - but resurrecting account the other day all seems kosher.
(so was looking at some lion cells/smart switches/ I 'needed')

Mine is still going well (2012 - possibly from your recommendation here?). I recently invested in some replacement seals with a clean/partial rebuild and a bottomless PF and precision basket with a new tamper. Then I converted the original PF into a gauge and set it to 9 bar. Huge improvement. Not as big as the grinder was (Eureka Mignon) but significant. However with decent coffee and perhaps not all the time in the world, I also struggle with temperature and consistency. Have you considered PID or arduino upgrades?

I could not convert the PF (take the spout off), do you still have that PF with the gauge? I thought about getting one pre-made but seem like a waste for single use, is it possible to "rent" it off you for a weekend?

Mine should have the adjustable valve inside to change the pressure being an older model.

You’re welcome to if you want. I struggled with the same but how it did it in the end was put a long screwdriver through the hole of the spout and carefully turn it around until the threadlocker broke and it came free. Once I had the bottomless one I was not that concerned about breaking it anyway, but it’s quite strong.

That would be great, yes please!

Replaced the burrs on my ~9 year old mazzer mini this morning. Two (well, three) points of interest:

Firstly, they shipped face-to-face with an unsecured plastic shim between them, which means they have inevitably slipped out of position and there are tiny chip marks in the burrs where they have rubbed in transport. I can't send them back because I actually bought these two years ago and have only just bothered to replace them :x

Secondly, I've had to reduce my timers by ~60%! The sharp(er) burrs are ridiculously more efficient at grinding now.

We held a cup session and had a range of exotic beans to try. Having travelled most corners of the world, this Yemeni variant was the peak of coffee tasting for me. It was so wild for anything I could compare it to. I now understand why the Qima auctioned for far more than originally anticipated. Has anyone tried it?

Yeah I had this at Qima coffee on Warren street a few weeks ago, it was very good!

What reasonably priced fruity coffee are people enjoying ATM?

I've had an Origin "small office" subscription for the last few years and it appears they forgot to increase the price (was £20 a kg) but they now have realised and it's up to £28. At £20 nobody else could come close to the quality, but truth be told the coffee has rarely been quite to my taste.

I generally skip past any coffee that has any references in tasting notes of nuts or chocolate, and go straight for only fruit notes.

I've subscribed to this for now, £30 a kg if your subscribe (I get through that in around two weeks but you can cancel the sub whenever). It's a washed Ethiopian at the moment which sounds decent even though I lean towards naturals.

Unfortunately most of the coffee I like the sound of tends to be £40+ a kg and I don't really want to spend that, ideally £30 or less.

This is for espresso, I have a 75mm flat burr grinder (Eureka Atom 75) and still use my Sage Oracle for pulling the shots.

The more unusual coffees I tend to find are getting nearer £40 a kg these days. I subscribe to gustatory.co which I’ve found gives a nice range of coffee and has a variety of subscriptions at under (as well as above) £30 per kg. You can also choose tasting note preferences which is helpful.

Other thing would be to look out for discount codes and stock up and freeze fruity coffees.
