Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

So what do you reckon Flibster? What's best, vac pot or Chemex? Or is it too early to tell and you want to wait for the infatuation with the new toy to pass before you can decide dispassionately? :)

Ok, Out of all my brewing methods, my current favourite is the Clever dripper.

But, I do have and regularly use the chemex, aeropress, french press *still not great at using it*, V60, syphon, espresso machine, woodneck, eva solo and various other filter methods. ;)

Saw this, and thought of this thread.

And to add something constructive - Wish I could go back to 3rd Floor Espresso for a coffee. They were amazing :(.

Hmm... am I right in assuming that the Clever is just a cone with a valve at the bottom? And you use normal conical filters in it? That's such a simple and idiotproof idea it almost feels like cheating, I don't think I'd enjoy my coffee if it were that easy to make! :p

Close, it's not a cone filter it's a normal 4cup filter. It really is pretty simple, but produces great coffee.

I use french press grind and have both a paper and swissgold filter in it - paper first then swissgold on top. Hit the 3:45 brew time and whip out the swissgold and it takes 99% of the grounds with it and stops the brewing immediately. All the fines get caught by the paper filter.

It's what I've used most over the last few weeks.

The Nisbet burner turned up today and I'm impressed with the solid build quality :) Going to have a good chance to play around with the syphon this weekend. Hopefully I can get something better than the horrible burnt peanut tasting stuff I produced before!!

Any tips on a good value thermometer? At the moment I'm using one of those £5 ebay meat thermometers but for some reason it has been switching itself off at random.

I'm loving the Clever dripper, and finding it much easier to get on with than the Aeropress. I still can't find 'flavours' in my coffee, but I can certainly tell a difference between brew times now (accidentally went 1 minute longer this morning, and it really wasn't the coffee I enjoy).

I'm currently using Technivorm Brown Filter Papers, but I like the idea of the swissgold alongside them, as that makes getting the overall brew time a bit easier.... May have to try that :D

My current method (taken from somewhere or other) is just wetting the filter papers, adding around 30g of coffee and then 360g of water, stir after 1:45 and then put on cup after a further 1:45. I normally remove it from the cup after 1:30 with a slight bit of water left over the grounds.

Makes a very smooth cup, and means I can no longer drink the coffee at work ;)

Time to OC my classic:D
Quick question though,

Happy donkey have the Rancilio steam wand for £27:50, but on Drury tea & coffee site they have a (V3) rancilio steam wand for £22

Anyone know if they are both classic compatible, and if so, which one to go for.

The V3 does fit, but as it's articulated it requires a lot more work to get it to work. Removing the internal copper pipes for the original steam wand and re-bending them and so on.

The V1/2 is the standard replacement as it's a 10 minute job.

Cheers for the quick reply, shame drury have sold out of the V1's they are a lot cheaper than happydonkey.

Just went to HD to purchase, and it comes to a total of £38:10! Think I'll stick with the origian classic for now

I Would quite like to start getting in to my coffee. Getting fed up of instant. Don't really fancy espresso's yet.

Any good guides/starter packs.

Excellent. :D

Check out www.brewmethods.com for the various non-espresso methods that are available.

Probably the cheapest is a basic filter cone, filters and pre-ground coffee from somewhere like hasbean. All in for under £15 and will be better than anything you can get in the supermarket.

To go further, a hand grider is the minimum and then then you can use pretty much any form of brewing.

Also, want to buy a Clever dripper as a gift for some coffee-loving friends, but can't find it in stock anywhere. By which I mean I checked coffeehit and then I tried Google, and when that didn't work either I searched on the 'bay in desperation. Anyone know of any place that have them in or shall I just buy them a V60?

Square Mile have them. The online shop has been a little slow to process orders but things have arrived well packed.

Cool, thanks dude! :)

@Siliconslave: also very tempted, the guy is quite good!

PS. woah! Square Mile are pretty expensive compared to other places! They're also, sadly, sold out...

Give these people a ring:

http://shop.ristrettocoffee.com/index.php

Never seem to have it listed on their website but last time I spoke to them they had some in. I think they were around £15+delivery.

Ah thanks for that! I called and asked and he does indeed have them. And no, they're still not on his website! :p

Good stuff :) May have to order myself one soon.

Also getting great results with the syphon now. Going to have to order another at that ridiculously low price as a spare as I'm bound to break it at some point!!
