Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

Great choice on a first grinder :)

Have a look at creamsupplies for good prices for tampers and other accessories. The 58mm Motta tampers are great:

Oh and when you do get the Classic, first thing to buy is a standard non-pressurized portafilter basket. You could try emailing Philips/Gaggia and see if they'll send you one but I know some people have been refused and redirected to where to buy them from. Only a few quid from ebay if they've decided not to give them away anymore.

Thanks, i just placed an order for the aero press and a bag of the coffee you recommended. Hopefully the end of wasting the last bit of coffee thats full of sediment :).

Aeropress is fantastic bit of kit. I make a shot of 'espresso' with it then top up with water to make an Americano. Just bought the metal filter disc for it too, saves rinsing the paper filters....

Clever Dripper is worth a look too, works amazingly well with the Hasbean Philter blend. Just lacks the mouthfeel of the Aeropress which is lovely, really thick strong flavoursome coffee!

Thought it would be simple to find so I didn't ask previously, but... what do I search to get a non pressurized basket? I have tried multiple searches on ebay but just keep getting 2 results for a "krups" machine.

Got my Aeropress today from Hasbean. Very quick delivery as usual!

Just wanted to check something. The version I have received is like a greyish brown see through plastic, whereas the ones I have seen in reviews are clear plastic. The model number is A80. Is mine an older model or a new one?

Its really good and well worth the money. My coffee had no sediment in the bottom and I love that it makes a compressed puck out of the coffee. makes getting rid of it a lot easier. coffee tasted great as well, just need to experiment a bit to get the right strength.

Mine's the brown colour too. Was bought as a Xmas present in 2011.

There are umpteen different Aeropress methods. Keep experimenting and see what works to your taste.

Do you have scales and a thermometer? Useful tools to keep parameters the same.

Yeah mine is the brown-ish version.

As for brew mthods I always use the HasBean inverted method - did you get the flyer with instructions?

My method is as follows:
- Boil kettle
- Grind beans (hand grinder :p)
- When kettle's boiled, soak filter paper, warm cup and Aeropress.
- Leave kettle with lid off for 3mins
- Add coffee to AP (inverted)
- Fill up AP with water until about 1cm off the top
- Stir for 10secs
- Screw cap on and gently push AP down (still inverted) to get rid of air from top
- Leave to brew for 60secs
- Flip over onto mug and plunge slowly

A tip when plunging is to just let your weight do it. Don't try to force it too quickly.

Hope that helps :)

Hmm, surely the water will be too cool after 3 minutes? Hasbean recommend 80-85 deg. c water. The Hasbean guide I have seen also says to brew for 30 seconds after the initial 10 second stir.

Be thankful. I've got one of the original aeropresses and it's a lovely pale blue and full of potentially cancer causing chemicals.

Still use it though. :D I eat brocolli - brocolli eats cancer. ;)

i dont know how i did it but i managed to get my wife to agree it was a good idea (maybe pushing the truth, i got an OK from her... even if its just to stop me wanting she still said yes :)) so today i have placed my order for a Fracino Cherub and Eureka Mignon grinder :D

i have no idea how long delivery from Fracino takes, Ordered from Espressounderground originaly but i ordered my Mignon at dinner from BellaBarista and it was dispatched before i finished work.

now all i need is some 'decent cheap beans' (if such a thing exists) to season the grinder and get a rough dial set... i dont want to just grab a couple of bags and grind them for the sake of it i would prefer to atleast have a nice coffee to drink once i have it correct.

ill post some pics once they arrive.

Although I've not been hands on, I've read a lot of user comments and based on them it looks like you've made really good choices with the machine and grinder :) Also, excellent wife you have, sir!! Remember the payback will be to make coffee for her on demand :p

Do you like coffee with milk? I find the Lavazza (black packet) is quite acceptable in a latte/cappuccino. It's around £3.59 normally so it's not dirt cheap. Remember though that you'll still have to dial in any new beans you buy so it's normal to waste a bit of any new coffee unless you get really lucky!

Look forward to seeing your pics and good luck with the new setup :)

Cheers Hamster, its interesting as she doesnt really drink that much coffee, she did like the fact the cherub has hot water on demand as she drinks a lot of green/fruit tea mixtures but she does enjoy a steamed milk hot chocolate at night so it will still get plenty of use.

i have used the Lavazza espresso before and was happy with it, i think ill pick up some next time im at the shop.

i have access to Makro and was tempted at picking up a 1KG bag of douwe egberts espresso beans just for convenience but i think they are slightly cheaper online and as i have never had them before i dont know that i will like them so may not be a wise choice

ill get some pics up once it arrives, this set of shifts cant go soon enough

Has anyone had a decent espresso bean recently?

My last bag from has bean was Brazil Perfito, which is up there with fazenda and orporapa for me. Nutty, sweet and a smooth but slightly viscous consistency it worked well as espresso and in a flat white.

Just bought some union foundation and revelation. I think they may be a bit darker than I'm used to but looking forward to trying something new.

Been working on my steaming technique and had good results by placing the wand in the centre, skimming the surface of the milk to create a whirlpool. No moving of the wand, no dunking. The milk is more velvety and uniform than before.

We ough to have a coffee shop meet up some time as well. I was in attendant this week quite by chance. Charming and interesting store, good staff and an excellent flat white.

Good choice on the grinder! I've had my Mignon for 3 years and it has been superb. Don't hear about a lot of people buying them though.

I was advised by the users of coffeeforum and the looked into reviews, I was after the various but the cost and reviews of the mignon made it seem the better choice, also a similar square style that should match the cherub
