Silly Clients

Really? What was the thinking behind that

I think and don't quote me on this :) it boils down to cpu power being more expensive than HD space. Exchange is now more economical in HD read/writes you can get away with much cheaper/sower drives.

I guess they don't factor in backup sizing when the calculate this....

Not a client, but my favorite story. When I was doing a graphic design course years ago we had to scan in a document for one project. One girl just couldn't get it to work and it seemed to make no sense. Finally we decided she must have just put it in the scanner wrong, so we went over to look. No document in there. We laughed and figured that was the problem. Then she said "no - I didn't put it in there!". When we inquired as to where she had put the document, she informed us that she had folded it up really small.......and shoved it into the floppy drive on her Mac

Absolutely true. Nobody had told her to do this as a joke or anything. She just thought that if you shoved it inside the computer it magically scanned it in, bless her.

I can quote you on that as it is correct. Silly Microsoft...

Backup sizing will be negligible as any decent backup software should dedupe but active storage of data without single instance can prove to be quite demanding.

Why do people lie?

Me: Have you rebooted your laptop?

Her: Yes, i did it twice

Me: Ok *reboots laptop again, everything works perfectly* there you go

I remember a product which would strip the Store of any attachments, dump them somewhere else, and leave a link to the file in the email.
Seemed like a good fit with Storage server but I guess it never happened.
Microsoft never did seem to have a good solution to storing and backing up data.

/

Had a client get hit with a virus that wiped out most of his files, I pointed at his large external drive just to confirm he had made the expected backup.
Nope, he never backed up a single thing, he only used that drive to copy files to his laptop...
Five years of data, gone ._.

'I see stupid people - they're everywhere'

Knew there was a thread somewhere on this subject.

On my days off from my main profession I run a small web design business which ticks along nicely. A lot work which comes my way is word of mouth. I started a web project for an ex colleague in February and it was completed mid March. I've yet to be paid the outstanding amount for its completion. It's partly my fault as I usually request a deposit of half the agreed cost of a site at the beginning of a project and expect payment in full at the end. But I happened to casually mention that final payment wouldn't be expected until 'you are 100% happy with the web site'. He's informed me that he's not yet willing to complete payment on the site. Why? This:-

'Hi, We're over the moon with the site, it's all we hoped for. But I'm still not seeing it on page 1 of Google'.

-'Yeah, you won't see it pushing up the listings much as yet, it's only been online in its finished form for under a month'

'But why is it not on page 1 yet?'

-'I've explained that on numerous occasions, it takes time to achieve the results you are looking for - but here goes again.......'

'You said I wouldn't have to pay you until I was 100% happy with it. Well, I'm not. Because it's not on page 1 of Google yet. Until that happens, I'm not paying the remaining fee'

-'Uhmm....ok'

/bangs head off desk

I've often thought that taking peoples sites offline and in its place whacking up their company logo with a 'This web site has been suspended for non-payment of fees' was a crass idea, but lately I'm not so sure it is........

I guess you started a "project" and not simply a "website" and as such this (he feels anyway with his limited technical understanding) gives him carte blanche to screw you over for as long as he sees fit on any number of little points. Not that you were thinking that when you kindly told him to pay when he was happy. Clients eh... :(

Get him to sign up for a google account and make sure he is logged in.
His website will soon appear on page1 then ;)

Just do some dodgy SEO to quickly get it on page 1:D

"You were quoted for website design and creation -- not an SEO campaign. Pay up, or the site comes down and a notice goes up."

I've come across this a LOT before.

Problem is, it's people's misunderstanding of what a reboot actually *does* that means that they almost always answer yes to this question.

They've seen the jokes about it in every TV show, they've all had a good laugh about "Have you tried turning it off and on again?" and presume this is just a worthless throw-away that IT uses to try and get a caller off the phone.

If they engaged brain for a few moments, they'd realise that if all a reboot did was get you off the phone, you'd be back again 3 minutes later with the same problem

Perhaps us IT lot should stop calling it a reboot, and start referring to it as a "volatile memory base load re-configuration?"

Brb off to trademark that! :D

To get around the have you turned it off and on again, I've started to say 'There's an update on your computer that needs to be installed and this is the cause of your problem. Unfortunately, you need to restart your computer for the update to be installed'.

Works every time.

you can even send one to them that causes an update message to appear XD

Dont do that :(

Then the poor support guys will have to start asking:
"have you tried matt_fsr's trademarked volatile memory base load re-configuration?"

Too late! :D

I usually just fiddle around with something on the machine, and then pretend to have changed a setting that needs a reboot to take effect.

I'd say 80% of the time when I suspect a reboot will fix an issue, a reboot does fix the issue!

How about this...

Whatever could this be...?

Laptop_draw_1_zps96c72104.jpg

A strange ethereal glow emanating from a small filing cabinet...

Laptop_draw_2_zpsdaf6cb69.jpg

Yup, that's a laptop. Turned on, plugged in and left in a closed filing cabinet with it's cooling vent obscured by a box and all sorts of stationary sat on the keyboard.

Was even logged on and on the desktop!

Had been in there for around a day and was lovely and toasty... thank goodness I spotted it as us tech's are off site all of next week.

Crazy!

How the **** does this even happen? Like, what possible rational explanation could there be for that?
