Sim City 4

If I need industry in my city for jobs can I build it in a region next to mine and connect it with roads and they will travel away for jobs?

Also what do farms come under on tax settings?

Agricultural but not worth it if just trying to get jobs/money the above gets me $84 a month compared to $6,600 for residential

Just an example to my linked citys;

Some bigger cities do have ind in but i keep away from res and use highway walls to limit air pollution spread

What's the point in farms then?

I guess it's just to offer alternatives in what sort of city you build. Seeing as you can build multiple cities in the same region, you might not fancy having an entire region of metropolis-esque cities. You might fancy a farm town or something! :D

That being said, like it's been said before, all this talk of SC5 and after watching the trailer for it... it's got me wanting to play SC4 again.

I do wonder though, how much integration they'll have with "The Sims" franchise? As SC4 tried to make something of it, but it was pretty minimal. My girlfriend loves to play The Sims and it'd be nice, if in some way, I could create a city for her minions to walk about in and play about in. That'd actually be pretty sweet, but I'm probably way off with what they're actually planning to do. It wouldn't surprise me if they abandoned the entire Sims concept as it really didn't provide anything at all to SC4.

To OP: your road structure looks alright. You generally want to make small districts of roads feeding into avenues or highways. I would avoid streets in the long run. It’s not just about capacity but speed. The higher the grade of road the faster the cars travel and thus reducing community times, which can be a city killer.

Farms are pointless in the long run. You reach a point were there no demand for them and the number of jobs is really really low better to replace with industry.

Damm, I just know I'm going to be playing this all weekend now :p

I used this guide when I first started playing.

Cheers for that link to that guide. I had a blast yesterday and it really helped me out. Like most people I fail at this game then resort to downloading a trainer and making a massive metropolis.. This guide has made it fun again.

I really really like the idea of SC4 and I have tried to play it on so many occasions. I even bought it again when it was on a Steam sale. Regardless of how many times that I have tried to play this game I utterly fail in an often spectacular way.

After forgetting the pain of failing so often I then tend to find a thread like this which often gets me intrigued enough to install the game again, and then repeating the failure process.

who knows I might even read that posted guide :D

Is there any advantage in applying mods to improve the playability of the game, like the ones which alter the road and rail networks.....?

edit: Tried the "-CPUCount:1 -Introff -w -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32" and it looks good but my taskbar (Win 7x64) is always on top, I don't really want to auto hide the taskbar just for this game. Even missing out the w (Window) doesn't help, I am running at 1920x1080.

EDIT:

I solved this by editing the launch options under Steam to...

-f -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080

the f meaning fullscreen.

As far as I know its pretty much for the aesthetics nothing more. I could be wrong though. I am like you. Try to play it and fail. Don't play it for ages, see a post about it or read on the net and try again. That guide, if you follow it well does actually help and you can get a good region going. I started it yesterday and it was going well. A residential district and a Industrial on separate map tile and both made money. Tried it from the start this morning and peeps moaning about commute time and abandoned their homes.. Have to to try again..

Just reinstalled SC4 deluxe and playing again now. I have played around with the network addon mod (NAM) before and also a mod which increases jobs for industrial zones (Industry quadrupler).

I do manage to fail most of the time by developing too fast. I also tend to neglect leaving space between zones for transportation upgrades/trains/schools etc.

I find that time just vanishes when I play this, just like Civ series.

I have started a new city using the guide posted above and its booming. Only have two tiles on the go but a 3rd will be needed soon as the commute from one side of the map is too long. Its only a small city/town with 12,000 population but its bring in 9k a month and the outgoings are around 3k.. its all good. Once you get the hang of it and try not to plonk things down willy nilly its quite good and involving. Time will tell if its like that once I get too 100,000+ population.

I love this game, but for some bizarre reason, it doesn't run that well on my system!

I get dreadful jerkiness when panning around the city. Anyone else suffered with this? I would have thought it would have been as smooth as a baby's rear end.
