I've not driven a BMW and I don't own a car.

Yes it make's me a keyboard warrior to a certain extent but my opinion is still valid :)

I don't buy that. I don't even detest BMWs for one, I can name several BMW cars that I'd enjoy owning - 2002 Turbo, M1, M635 CSI, E39 M5, MINI Cooper S to name five.

The only reason I borrowed that 330 for a day was because Grandad had bought one* and I wanted to see what he saw in it. And I did - it was very comfortable, the ergonomics were great and it had enough power to chat along at a decent pace. Good car, does everything very well indeed. Which is more than likely the reason why I didn't like it.

The good news is that if I follow Grandad's pattern then I'll be ready to have fun in the E936 3 Series which will be coming out some time around my 70th birthday :)


*....we-e-ell, bought one doesn't really cover the story. His E46 328 got rear-ended by some woman driving her SUV while on the phone. The repair team that the insurers sent the car to managed to set fire to it, destroying most of the rear end. Cue one large cheque to Mr Terence Smith so he could go out and buy an E90 330.....

Dear, God I drive a four-door Chevette...With no interior...A pair of small seats...very little in the way of exhaust silencing...Konis with Spax springs, no heater, half a dashboard and zero audio equipment.

Yup...pensionable runaround...

And it's certainly not a 'classic' - I have no pretentions.

It's old, noisy, uncomfortable, it weighs naff-all, it probably has 40bhp at the wheels, you can't even fit a resistor of justice because it sucks air and fuel through a fat carb, it rolls on 13" wheels and 145-section ditchfinders but...you know what? I love driving it - I can feel everything that it does; I can feel the rear step out slightly when you're really pushing it, I can feel and hear when it's running a bit out (and I can remedy it in half an hour with a handful of tools), I love how my head sits behind the B pillar, I love how impressionable kids say 'is it a rally car, mister?', I love how almost everyone over 25 says 'I used to have one of those' or 'I knew someone who had one of those', I love how it's better than a mkII Escort, I love having a car that is unique on britains roads...And I love how repmobile-drivers shake their head and ask 'Why?'.

I'm 22 years old, I drive a car that puts a grin on my face every time I even look at it and every time I park it amongst my colleagues' cars. Sue me.

Can certainly see where some people in this thread are coming from - a lot of the younger drivers on here have been pampered with their car ownership and have, in my opinon, missed out on the joys of owning something 'raw'.

Getting a nearly-new modern design car as a first vehicle may seem great, but there's a lot of knowledge and enjoyment to be gained from owning slower, less capable, more basic cars.

I've only driven three beemers in the 17 years I've been driving - a 323i, an X5 and a M3. They were all excellent cars, however they were not 'fun'. The M3 was fast and a superb driving tool, but because it was so capable you didn't feel any excitement when driving it. It felt more like playing a PS2 game.

So in many ways something like a Chevette (although my sole experience of one was in a friends with no back seats which almost cracked my spine) could be considered more fun than a lot of 'better' modern cars.

You forget everything, you drive a Chevette... hang on, so much more circumstantial evidence points to you being 70 than me ;)
