Singapore Grand Prix 2014, Singapore - Race 14/19

I didn't think it was a great drive tbh,

you must have watched a different race.

The rate at what Lewis pulled away after the safty car was just plain crazy. I was watching the timings like excited child with amazement at how despite his tyres being fairly old he pulled away at such a pace. The car in qualifying form was sub 1 second faster, Lewis was pulling 3 seconds on used tyres compared to new although different compound.

What a drive, just sensational viewing the gap to get was like 27 seconds and I did not believe he would do it, yet how easy was it made to look.

He was pulling away because the others were trying to conserve their tyres to make it to the end (driving like a grandma, as Massa put it). Hamilton hadn't used the soft tyres and had to make an extra stop, so was able to abuse his tyres.

Says a lot about Button then considering Hamilton thrashed Button in Qualifying in 10,11 and 12 yet Button scored more Championship points overall... that's awful for Lewis lol...had such a massive advantage come Saturday night yet couldn't score more points in the end. LOL.

Also says a lot about Perez, had a bigger advantage come Saturday night, yet Button scored twice as many points.

Also says a lot about Magnusson....Jenson has scored TWO THIRDS of Mclaren's overall points this season, he has scored TWICE (double) the amount that Kevin "the second coming" Magnusson has scored, yet qualified further back.

Very impressive stuff by Jenson, cheers for backing it up ;) :)

I've always said that Button is the perfect no.2 driver, he generally won't trouble a top driver on the track as he's too slow and is unlikely to win a Championship without luck but he'll bag a team lots of points. Button might have scored more points than Hamilton but he never looked like challenging for titles unlike Hamilton who lost lots of points for various reasons.

Just as ruthless as Williams in 2000.

Don't even have to go back that far, Williams were also pretty ruthless in 2011 dropping Hulkenberg for Maldonado's cheque.

With regards to BUT/MAG (IF ALonso is to go to McLaren) I think it's a tricky one, as has been said Button will likely do a good job of collecting points and could be used to go on differing strategies etc if he is the 'No. 2', he's a known quantity.

I think it would be a bit harsh to just write off Magnussen already though, he's getting beaten by his teammate who is in their 14th year in F1 in his rookie year and that seems surprising? He has pace and quite often that is all that teams look for mostly everything can be taught or learned over time.

lets not go through all this again.

To be fair Hulkenberg didn't look utterly brilliant in 2010 other than the odd excellent performance, and Maldonado had just won the GP2 title. The general consensus was that Maldonado was reckless, but on his day he could be amazing. As it turned out in an F1 car those days came to the grand total of two. But still, given the way the previous season had panned out it was understandable why they made the decision, even before considering Maldonado's tens of millions of pounds.

I'm not convinced on Hulkenberg any more. He's looked nailed on for a top seat for each of the last three seasons and yet he's been bounced around between Force India and Sauber. You'd think one of the top teams would have taken a punt on him for one of the seasons, yet time and time again he's been passed up. It can't just be his height - if he was good enough surely a team would have gone for him for by now. After all Webber was accommodated at Red Bull, even with the space-intolerant Newey.

This season he's been rather lacklustre and Perez has been showing him up recently, and Perez isn't regarded as a top driver after his stint at McLaren. OK, but the sort of driver a team would go for if the rest of the market was already sewn up.

So either Hulkenberg's stock has dropped, or he already knows he's got a better seat next season (though hard to see where - a good fit for McLaren perhaps, with or without Alonso?).

The way mercedes worded it initially I thought they meant sabotage

maybe i'm just paranoid

That is exactly what the headlines are implying from the phrase "foreign substance".

If as the newest tweet says it's a normal substance used in servicing of the steering column, then why call it foreign substance.

Unfortunate really the problem didn't manifest itself earlier and so could have been repaired. It can be interpreted as a bit suspicious and will give conspiracy theorists the ammunition they need.

i'm more used to vague descriptions of failures like 'electrical/hydraulic/software fault'

so what they are actually saying is someone messed up at the factory

I'm not convinced, I don't think many would have rated Maldonado over Hulkenberg, now or in 2010. Yes Maldonado won the GP2 series, but it was 4th (I think) season and you could argue it wasn't against the best competition. I'm not having a pop at Maldonado but I don't feel he'd have ended up anywhere near F1 without his monetary backing.

I agree Hulkenberg, after a very solid start to the season, has seemed a little off the boil the last few races but I'm not sure Perez is showing him up. Perez on his day is very good but he seems to excell at differing his strategy, the races it doesn't play out no one is too surprised as he's not so highly rated but when it does (perhaps for the same reason) it seems impressive, sames goes for his agressiveness, great when it works out, makes him look a fool when it doesn't.

I don't know if Hulkenberg will ever end up in a top car... The big teams mostly seem to like to promote from within at the moment, I still think he is highly regarded, his height won't be the only reason he hasn't been picked up yet but it won't help his cause, especially this year as the weight limit is harsh and he's naturally going to be heavier. I do think he deserves a shot in a top team and hope he'll get his chance, guess we'll just have to wait and see...
