Hello chaps,

I'm looking for a single GPU for BF4. I want to run at max ideally and had picked the 280x Toxic, which is now 5-6 weeks away.

I'm looking for an alternative and have upto £350 to spend.

There's no likelyhood of doubling up in the next 12 months, so 1 card will have to do.

I'd like specific suggestions rather than just a model number if possible please :)

#EDIT - AMD only please ;)

The answer to your question is highly restrictive considering the budget and inclusion of one brand.

Hence,

If

Budget < £350 = TRUE

AND

Budget = £350 = FALSE

AND

Brand = AMD = TRUE

Output

R9 290

Wait for non ref r290s, these cards will be amazing with a proper cooler on, the performance is already there, just need to sort the noise out.

Incredible bang for buck.

Either wait for 290pro with custom coolers.

If however you want one "NOW" grab one 290pro at ~310, add some more money for an MK26 and you are done :D

When are they due? Shame the 290X is so far outside my budget really.

Just how loud are the reference boards and is there much difference between them?

#EDIT - Is there much difference between 280x and 290?

290's a different chip. 7970 = Tahiti, 290 = Hawaii. I think the 290 has a lot more overhead available than the 7970, so would wait for non-ref cooling 290s or pick up the MK-26

I don't know tbh.

I couldn't honestly tell you what the difference is, or how much louder they are without trying them.

I think if you're playing at 1080p, then a 280x should be more than enough.

I have a HIS R9 290 and will be buying the 1st decent aftermarket cooler I can get my hands on.

More of a hum than the whine/buzz from the fan on my HIS 7950 IcyQ Boost, but the 290 is considerably louder at full load.

Your code is shoddy, his budget is £350 so that can't be FALSE :p

I wasn't going to say as much, since he offered help, but I thought so too :P

Is there any clue as to when the non-reference 290's are going to be released? I don't really want to wait till xmas to play bf4 :(

just buy the standard one just now and if you feel the need to strap a custom cooler onto is later... I have a 290x and to be honest the noise is not as bad as people make it out to be. You will struggle to hear it over your headphones

Don't buy a 280x if you want to max out bf4 on ultra with 4*msaa at 1080p and above and are looking for 60+fps at a constant. Go for a 290 when the none reference coolers come out.

Honestly, based on the threads in the PC Gaming section of these forums BF4 is currently a buggy, unbalanced mess. I have no doubts that once they finish patching it it will be great but don't rush into getting a new card now to play a game that is essentially still in beta.

Play it on medium settings now without AA, then really appreciate the difference when you get your new card (290 with third party cooler) in a month or two.

His budget is actually up to £350 which does not include £350 itself, hence the boolean expression evaluates to false. :o
