Sir Alex Ferguson Retires

I personally think that Jose Mourinho will be the most successful manager ever, in 10 seasons of competitive football he’s won 7 titles, 2 European Cups, UEFA Cup and also the only manager to win the league in England, Italy and Spain.

I don't think you can compare Fergie with Mourinho tbh, for Fergie to stay and keep Man Utd at the top for as long as he has is an achievement all in its own. Yes Mourinho has done well at multiple different clubs but there's no argument Fergie couldn't of done likewise - thankfully for us though we've had him all to ourselves

Like I said to Tummy previously its impossible to say who's the greatest of all time all you can say is though that Fergie is without doubt one of the greatest of all time

I don't think he's one of the greatest actually, I think he's one of the most succesful and certainly most successful in British football.

Fair enough. Personally I don't think you can be considered one of the most successful without also being considered one of the greatest but there you go :)

I think there is a case of not giving Everton any of the spot light here, the next manager of Everton is going to be a huge appointment.

Very true and without sizeable finacial backing (the likes Moyes never got) they could struggle to stay as a top 5/6 side imo. They could have a couple of sticky looking seasons (I'm thinking between 11th and 16th)

There's probably always going to be somewhere else Mourinho wants to go tbh (that's not a negative thing per-say either) as I said previously he's never hid his ambition to manage the Portuguese national side one day so its quite conceivable that he'll go to Chelsea for 3 years and then go into International management for a couple of tournaments/4 years then maybe find one last club or retire all together...

I think there is an obsession with loyalty in football in this country and I don't quite understand it.

Supporters are loyal to one club (well apart from G|mp) its not that hard to understand why they hope players/managers feel the same. It's blind hope obviously but whatever :p

So really, when you consider the strength of the Milan team in the early 90s, and the Barca team from about 2005 onwards, Ferguson has actually done pretty well, particularly consider he got to a couple of additional finals in addition to that, losing to an incredibly good Barca side both times.

He's hasn't done bad but he himself will admit he could have done better as well, there are years when we've let ourselves down, there are years where we've been done by poor refereeing (albeit you should never rely on officials getting every decision correct) and then recently we've been unfortunate to come up against this Barcelona side (though again we let ourselves down in 2009, could have done much better then)

I would agree that two European titles is impressive, however when you take in to account that's for the club at the top of British football and over 26/27 years it's a less impressive achievement.

Its really not as black and white as that though, firstly we've only been 'at the top' during the PL era so that's then 21 years, at the start of that period there was the foreigner rule in Europe which wasn't removed until 96 IIRC and then 3 years after that we did win it.

What I would say is it probably took Fergie till 2006/2007 to really master Europe and its that that doesn't reflect well on him imo as prior to that period we'd go into European ties and try to outscored the opposition, around 2006/2007 though we'd go away from home in Europe and come away with quite a few priceless 1-0 wins ergo the cliche of a 'good away European performance' and then just as it looked like he'd got it sorted we went and lost Ronaldo and you can see how over reliant Madrid and Barca are on him and Messi so loosing a player like that was always going to be a huge blow for us.

I know that will sound like a lot of excuses and don't think for a second I'm saying Fergie hasn't made mistakes himself (selling Beckham and Veron when he did in 2003, rotating the team far too much last season are two of the most obvious) but its not as simple as saying we've been at the top for 26 years so should have won it x amount of times. There was even a 3 year period between 03/04 and 05/06 where we weren't much kop at all even domestically (this period best known as the Djemba-Djemba period)

hope moyes plays hernandez more the guy has a class attitude cant say the same about rooney!

I reckon we'll see a lot and I mean a lot of Welbeck up front next season, in fact it was only the other week (possibly the derby) that I thought to myself about how well Welbeck would probably do for Moyes' Everton side...

Well someone has to say it; Moyes now has got a great chance to start his United tenure with a trophy when we play Wigan in August, fair enough we're only talking the Community Shield but still...

I always thought if there was one ever so small silver lining when Fergie did decide to retire it would be Nick would finally shut the hell up.... But no we're just going to have to live through more of the same old crap during Moyes' reign as well

Please someone just ban him would ya? :(

Nani is the 8th highest assister in the PL?

He's frustrating as hell but that aint bad for a player who's only been in the league since 2007

Not sure how getting rid of Phelan fits in with Fergie's vision of having the club full of ex-players, of course if Moyes brings in Phil Neville as his number 2 I could live with that :)

Shame about Eric Steele, he's obviously been a help to DDG :(

The reaction to Steve Round's apparent appointment has been a bit insane, considering he's only an assistant to Moyes.

Whilst I haven't read anything on the subject myself you can bet if there are those out there criticising the appointment they'll be the same ones who have stuck it to Phelan all these years also.

Like I said previously on the Meulensteen subject no one knows what these people actually do at the club but for some reason people latch onto their favourites and act all disappointed if something happens they don't like.

As has been said before its presumably only natural for Moyes to want to bring in his own staff from the off and its no surprise that they're people he's worked with at Everton, the only thing that could be worrying by doing so is what has been argued against Moyes' own appointment from the start and that's that we end up turning into Everton. It's a step up for all of them and no one knows yet of they're up to it...

Seriously WHO CARES??? I say again absolutely no one knows what he did at the club and hell lets say he was fundamental in how the first team lined up/played didn't most on here spend most of last season bitching about the performances? So couldn't this be a good thing?
