Anybody booked yet? Where are you going? Got a good deal?

Share all!

We have decided to go over Christmas this year (21st Dec - 28th Dec). Only ever been to Val Thorens (April 2013) and Obergurgl many years ago. Anybody been away over Christmas before or can recommend any other resorts.

I thought VT was brilliant but lacking in a bit of Character in the actual village, but for the range of runs I feel a bit spoilt now and hesitant about going to a smaller resort with less runs :(

Cheap/recommended ski Accomodation.

Thought it might be an idea to share any cheap accomodation that we have stayed in or managed to find. Might be helpful as I find searching for accomodation a nightmare with just a handful of places offering packages only.

We always self drive and as of yet have not come up over £600 per person including accomodation, lift passes, equipment hire (now have my own board and boots however) + travel.

I'll kick things off with an awesome apartment which is cheap as chips in VT...

Val Thorens, 3 valleys - http://www.homeaway.co.uk/p895717a
Sleeps 6
Great Location next to all the bars in VT, 30-40 steps from the slopes or there is a black run that takes you right next to the accomodation.
Price (for the apartment NOT per person) - Between £420 - £800 depending on time of year. We paid £550 in April half term last year

Would certainly recommend, and our view from the glazed balcony :

Perfect for anyone looking for a cheap apartment and looking to keep the costs down.

Maybe have a look at Courchevel? It's in the Three Valleys as well, and the village is lovely.

Otherwise take a look at Val D'Isere. Again, a great village and a lot of runs. It's marginally smaller than the Three Valleys, but there's still more than enough skiing for a week (if you get the Espace Killy lift pass). I was there two years ago and hit it really hard, skiing from first lift to last lift without stopping for lunch, and we just about covered everything. If you don't ski like a maniac you'll have plenty to do.

That sounds good to me. Is the nightlife good? Doesn't have to be as crazy as VT but as long as there are a few bars to go to at the end of the night that's good with me. I never got across to Courchevel although the accomodation seems a bit pricier.

Also been told to check out Alpe d'huez but not looked into this yet.

Yeah, the nightlife is a lot of fun. It's not as crazy as Val T, but it's good. If you happen to go a week later, there's an incredible New Years party in Tignes as well.

I've not been to Alpe d'Huez, but Les Arcs is also worth a look. I've heard that Avoriaz is decent too, although as it's slightly lower it may not have great snow at that time of year.

I shall be trying my hand at snowboarding this winter (I've been skiing once and loved it). The easiest for me to get to by public transport is Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver ($2.75 bus each way, and I have a year pass to go up the gondola to the top of the mountain until March 2014), it should be good enough to learn at.

Then if I actually get decent at it from going once every week or two, I'd like to explore Whistler and Cypress Mountain as well.

The main expense for me will be getting some gear and paying for lessons.

I'm giving it a miss this year sadly. Did my knee and missed half the holiday last year, and it's not worth the money to go again while it's still a bit weak :(

Going to Samoens with family again this year. Was great fun last year, have to go a bit further in the Flaine to get the best runs, the actual Samones ski are is fairly small. Going to try snowboarding this year, been skiing 7 or 8 times and done a taster in snowboarding and really enjoyed it. Can't wait until Christmas, might try to get away with mates as well, if they are up for it, or maybe even a OcUK trip. :D

2 trips this season. One to Austria with a big group and then somewhere else with just me and the mrs. We were in Austria a week ago (Kaprun area) and the snow is already starting to trickle down the mountains.

Looking forward to it, Went to Chamonix last year , which was great fun despite some near death incidents.

I want to go, but did my knee last year and am pretty sure it's too weak for skiing. Need to get involved with the physio again :(

Edit: Just realised I posted the same thing above! How old is this thread?!?

I'm out for a week at new year to start and then we'll see with work and that. Managed about 4 weeks last year, hoping for similar.

I am now looking at some new skis, but this also means new Mrs skis. I buy her some, I get away with buying me some :D
