Skoda

How's it going? :) I think I'm going to have a good look at the new vrs estate (petrol/manual) within the next few weeks. The hatch would probably suit me fine but I just don't get the look of that spoiler!

Have you specced any options?

Hey man - long time no speak - hope all is well!

Me personally - i've just spec'd the black pack and cruise control, boot liner (golf clubs and bikes in there)

You could go mad with options but not that fussed.

I've noticed it can have a heated front screen, surely that is a must too.... ?

Carfile.net already have some discount prices for the VRS:

Petrol :

SKODA OCTAVIA HATCHBACK - 2.0 TSI vRS 5dr - £19,870.10 (Saving £3,119.90)

Speaking to Carfile as well.

They do the discount, but CAN'T do the 0% finance and free servicing in that discounted price.

If you buying out right then carfile looks great, if your financing then the discounts are severely reduced if you want the 0% finance and free servicing etc.

They are getting me a quote on 0% finance and trying to see what discount they can get.

I'm not looking to buy now - in fact probably 12-18 months time.
I'm watching out for "VAT Free" offers in the future. It's how I got my current vRS and the effective 20% discount meant I was able to ad a lot more options and still keep the price sensible.

Interesting!

Spoke to Carfile the other day who are basically internet brokers. They put me in touch with a Skoda dealers down south.

The chap from the dealers called me back with a quote with approx 5% off the list price, and will still include the 0% APR and free servicing etc.

Without the finance above - he reckons he could get around £3k off the list price (about 12%) but due to the 0% offer being heavily subsedised, they can't get a large discount as normal

Still it comes in nearly £30 cheaper a month than the dealers in Glasgow that I was at the other day.

BOOM!!!!

New vRS estate, candy white, diesel manual.

With Black pack, cruise control, boot liner, mudflaps. (also got gap and brightshine stuff in for nothing)

Agreed deal today so will pop back to dealers on Monday to sort out the finer details.

PCP deal. Used the good quote from carfile/rainworth to squeeze the local dealers down and they came pretty close so happy to give them the business with only £10 a month difference and a decent p/x valuation on my BMW.

Got to within £6 a month of my budget I set at the start of this process!

Should be hassle free motoring for at least next 3 years (free servicing for 3 years or 30k miles, and £30 a year road tax!)

Will find out on Monday how long lead time is but likely to be 10-12 weeks.

Happy as a pig in ****

Sounds good. I think if I went for one I'd go Estate, White, Petrol, Black Pack, Cruise, Heated Front Screen, Sunroof, and a few other bits and pieces... but I'd be buying paying cash and keeping it as the long term family steed.

My problem is, I really like the idea of the V6 L&K Superb Estate... problem is, they seemingly don't exist second hand :(

Edit - Just priced up a Skoda VRS Estate as I'd have it on the Skoda config......£27630 !! I didn't even go mental on the options !

Accept I'd be able to get it down from there, Maybe low £24k ....?

Does feel like a lot of money...

Do you mind me asking what your payment on PCP was?

We've got a Fabia Elegance which we've always liked and now I'm looking at trading in my 59 plate Honda Civic Type S for a Fabia VRS. I've seen a couple around the Bath area which fit the bill but some of them have DSG. Excuse my ignorance but what exactly is DSG? Is it an automatic gearbox?

There is a problem with current lineup of Octavia 3 in UK.

First, engine vs drivetrain options. In current lineup 1.2 and 1.4 TSI engines were revised to be belt driven. Belt is of a long life type, but it's worth to remember that last time VAG tried this (1.8T) they had to lower down belt service intervals down to 40,000 miles after first few years and lawsuits. First reports from continent indicate "long life" oil intervals might have been electronically shortened to 13-15k miles on 1.4 TSI.

1.8 and 2.0TSI are still chain driven (at least there are chain parts listed in ETKA for both) and apparently a lot of changes were made to avoid the appetite for oil. In O2FL generation factory tolerance for TSI engines was 1 litre per 630 miles (which is why Skoda is still refusing to address oil consumption of 9 litres between two services 18,000 miles apart on my TSI as it's "within tolerance"). The current TSI generation tolerance was adjusted to "just" 0.5 litre per 1000 miles.

2.0TSI in O3 is only available in vRS range, while 1.8TSI was destined for high output and 4x4 versions of Elegance and eventually Laurin & Klement. However, due to unexplainable decision by Skoda UK, 1.8TSI models will not be sold in UK. They are available in other RHD countries, Ireland for example, but SUK will not allow any orders for the new 1.8 TSI through any UK dealers at the moment or in the near future. In similar fashion, UK dealers cannot order factory 4x4 versions in Hatchback format, petrol engines with 5th gen 4x4 haldex or 4x4 matched with DSG gearboxes (they use the old, more reliable 6 speed wet clutch boxes for haldex versions). The only 4x4's available in UK appear be two manual diesels in estate format. Some other options are inexplicably missing from UK catalogue as well. Some seat options, internal footwell lighting, chrome window surroundings and such.

But here is where SUK decision to shag around with factory spec creates a problem. Due to low power output being destined for fleets and mini cabs, Skoda (the factory) decided to remove multilink rear suspension from anything that does not have haldex or is below 160hp. Probably to save weight, cost and improve emission figures. In other words, the only O3 cars that will have handling and grip comparable with previous O2FL are the vRS, 4x4 petrols and 1.8TSI. The latter two are not sold in UK, which means the only way to get multilink rear suspension in UK is to order vRS.

Unlike the previous vRS range which had base price of £16k (via brokers), the new vRS range currently starts at nearly 20k (via brokers). Incidentally, that's about the sum that would previously buy you L&K TSI with about every single option factory had to offer in 02FL world.
Along with price hike it's also worth noting that UK vRS gets less standard equipment than RS on continent. Optional extras are a bit of a problem too. To give you an example, by the time you spec O3 vRS to have the same level as Golf GTI it will cost about the same (within 5% price difference) to the very Golf GTI with the same engine. Obviously Golf in comparison can be brought to the level one cannot spec on Octavia, mechanical limited slip differential, adaptive chassis control and more power out of the box to name but few major differences. In similar fashion, pimped out Elegance is more expensive than Leon FR with considerably more power and about the same toys.

Weird trivia about O3:
- in this generation hatchback has more real life loading space than estate. Estate still has more "volume", 20 litres or one jerry can worth of "air space" due to shape of the tailgate, but hatchback is few cm longer inside and has wider opening.
- vRS diesels get embarrassing "engine note" generator that plays back audio of fake petrol engine through speakers.
- All vRS have "fake diff". Upon fast cornering additional set of instructions in ABS system applies slight braking pressure on the inner wheel to increase torque on the outer wheel to imitate LSD behaviour.

In short, it's about what Evo said in their review

- in non vRS range, the only O3 cars worth having will not be sold in UK. The rest despite better tech, is worse drivers car than outgoing O2FL. Insanely priced on top of it.
- in vRS range, the current O3 vRS thanks to better tech is better car than outgoing vRS O2FL. Pricing to own is just prohibitively insane. Some positively cheap PCP are available, but almost all are based on totally miscalculated depreciation values and you are highly unlikely to be paying the final settlement figures to own it.

Realistically, Skoda UK will have to drop prices and go another permanent "0% VAT" for several years on O3. They overpriced the heck out of this car, probably to push slow selling Rapid to cabbies, but as Seat prepares to launch Cupra and ST before the end of the year, O3 prices will have to go down where they belong - back to £16k for vRS, under £20k for L&K. They'll probably call it "limited" or "Black" Edition for several years again.

Just noticed what meant to be few lines turned into one heck of a rant. My apologies. thanksfortheinfo.jpgs will be frowned upon. ;)

The current Fabia VRS is DSG only. There isn't a manual option.

I've got an estate version of the Fabia VRS that comes with the 1.4 TwinCharged 180PS petrol engine and 7 speed dsg gear box.

I should probably do a post in this thread with pictures, but it's not exactly an epic win car. Had it for 2 years nearly and broadly happy with it.

There are a lot of things "wrong" with the current Mk3 vRS line-up - but I'm sure they will be solved as SUK get feedback.
The high pricing is almost certainly VW's doing - remember they see every Skoda sale as a lost VW sale.
The new vRS does not have Cruise as standard - a nightmare to the fleet buyers who are not allowed to add extras.
For some reason the Winter pack (Heated front seats, heated front screen and heated washer lines) has been removed from the petrol engine. So you can only have that pack if you're buying a diesel.

I'm sure things will settle - pleased I'm not looking for another 12-18 months.

Where did you get this from? The GFV on my vRS i've ordered after 42 months is very low, not saying I will purchase by any means but to claim they are "miscalculated" is just misguided.

test drove the vRS estate petrol manual today. Lovely motor. a good 35 min drive on motorway, a road and back roads. Very impressive car. Doesn't feel like an estate when driving and can certainly shift!

Just about to pull the trigger on the diesel version, getting close to target figure of a decent monthly payment. Happy to play the waiting game with the dealers.

Good Luck, Im considering the Diesel vRS estate as well.

it's ordered - just waiting on the build week now - likely 10 weeks or so.

This is basically the colour and model i've ordered - minus the sunroof. (and red interior trim rather than the grey you can see on this one)

Which vRS variant did you go for? as in engine, manula or DSG

also what does the 'black pack' give you? is it simply black honecomb grills on the exterior

Hoping to test drive and talk figures on Saturday

manual/estate/diesel

Black pack is grill surrounds, mirrors, roof rails (standard on the estate) and grills.

Went to look at 3 cars today, one of which was the Fabia VRS. The other 2 were:

Suzuki Swift Sport 3 Dr
Fiesta ST

The Suzuki really surprised with with it's speed and road handling but the boot was tiny!

The Fiesta St was fantastic but there's a 22 week waiting period so no good for me, also felt guilty about spending £17k+ on a car (the Yorkshire in me)!

The last car we saw was the Fabia VRS. As soon as I saw the colour I loved it (fickle I know). It's Rally Green with a black roof and black alloys and a year old next month. All was going well though until I noticed just over a grand extra on the price. When I asked about it I was told it was for RTI Insurance, Road Tax and Williams Ceramic Coat. When we were chatting we were told me that the RTI and Williams were included so I thought that was a good deal for the price we're paying (11k). However, turns out they were added on and that's where the extra grand comes from (not counting road tax). I've now had them both removed from the price so happier now.

Out of interest is it worth having the ceramic coat done? A quick trawl of the web seems to indicate that it's cheaper if done by a detailer.

Anyway, loved the car and gave it a bit of a work out and it was very nippy, makes our current Fabia look like an OAP! I thought I'd find it strange driving an auto but it was fine. Hopefully I'll be picking it up in about 10 days time.
