Sky Broadband Unlimited (20Mbps) but getting max 1.7mbps

Hmm guys, my router has an ethernet cable that plugs into the computer as well, are you sure I can use it wirelessly? This is a picture of my router: http://87.86.186.37/Images/product_image1.jpg

Can you plug the modem into the master socket and test it from your brothers PC?

Then you will know what your potential sync speed is.

Also try the router plugged into the test socket (behind the faceplate, bare in mind removing the faceplate 'should' cut off all the other phone ports in the house...)

Can't, my brother's pc is downstairs :(

Right, this isnt that hard.

This is what your like atm?

Phone line --- Modem Router --- Integrated 4 port switch --- Your Comp

--- Wireless --- Your Brothers computer

If yes, the its simple:

Phone line --- Modem Router --- Integrated 4 port switch --- No computers plugged in.

--- Wireless --- Your Brothers computer
--- Your Computer

What's an integrated 4 port switch? Apart from that, yes, it's just like that.

Oh, also, just realised, my dad uses my sky as well. COmpletely forgot >.<

Oka,y so it's just that simple?

I'll unplug my router from the pc + socket.

Take it to my parents bedroom, plug it into the master socket behind the bedside table, put the ethernet cable in my cupboard.

Plug the wireless adaptor into my pc and do whateer I have to do to activate it on my pc, and thats it?

Yeah, you only need to have the power and telephone cables plugged into a wireless router.

Your computers then connect to the router wirelessly.

Before you move the router, make a note of the WEP/WPA passkey.

It might be written on the bottom of the modem...

You will need that when connecting your computer to the router.

Okay thanks, yup, it's on the back of the router, I actually know it off by heart though since ive needed it somany times D:

Thanks for the help dude!

Ill make a post on this thread again if anything goes wrong tomorrow :D

Not yet unfortunately :(

I didn't get my wireless adaptor today, it was shipped at like 9am today, when I get back from school tomorrow, ill see if there are any improvements and update you.

Thanks for checking back though :)

Yeah
Just saw that it was sent by second class.
1-2 days after despatch so since it was despatched yesterday at 9am itll come tomorrow I hope?

I would have moved it anyway, and just used the laptop until my stick came.

Try it, you will be amazed at the increase.

Do a speedtest before and after.

My dad uses the laptop so I cant use it :P

Okay, I'll try what you said in a few minutes, just gotta finish this last but very hard maths homework question >.<

It's in the other side of the garden 24 hours a day though, ive got an extension there which is my dads 'office'.

It's so much effort to plug it in, but!

My brother's pc has got a wireless adaptor on it. SO i'll just move my router to the maxter socket and see what internet speeds he's getting

Havn't had time to plug it in yet, sorry :(

The boiler in my house broke down and we have no hot water and I wanted to takea shower and it took absolutely ages!

But I'll definitely try tomorrow though, promise! :D

Okay, thanks, ill have my screwdriver handy as well (:

Well, turns out the socket in my dads room made no difference at all, it had the BT logo on it so I thought it was the master socket. I tried the socket downstairs next to the door, it has two cables coming out of it. But, when I do my internet is even slower on speedtest, getitng like 0.7mb/s comapred to the 1.7 id be getting before D: But the speed is still the same for the last two days, 1.5mb/s on the netgear router.

There is no test socket, I opened it up and all I saw was a bunch of cables :\

What phone socket was that in?

That is a much better connection, your SNR has majorly increased, if you leave it it should increase. Or you might have to ring sky and ask them to increase the speed.

It's in the master socket (i think). This socket has a cable that goes out of the house anda nother one that goes towards the inside of the house

By the way, can anyone tell me what noise margin is? D:

I guess that's the master then, but because it's not a proper NTE5 you have no way to isolate the internal wiring. I'm guessing someone messed around with it after BT had installed it.

Do you have a digital camera, that would make the whole thing a lot easier.

The master, if properly installed, looks like this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_telephone_sockets#New_style:_Removable_plate_.28NTE5.29

Mine looks more like the old style, except I cant tell if there's a T logo on it because my mum covered it up with tape because the faceplate kept coming off like 5 years ago

Well either way we've worked out there's a problem with your internal phone wiring (probably far too much of it if you have 17 sockets). Have you tried disconnecting the ring wire?

don't think my parents would let me do that lol

btw:

This is the statistics of my router when its plugged into my computer/socket behind the pc table

Not much change from the master socket? :|

Again, you either want this problem fixed or you don't. If you don't want to follow through with any of the advice being given then you might as well lock the thread and just live with your current speeds.

Okay, well I really do want this fixed, but I have to do it in a way that wont like risk damage the phone lines because I didnt even know what a master socket was until a few days ago! D:

Ill leave my router plugged in to the master socket overnight and if there's no difference, you guys will have to tell me what that ring wire looks like + how I remove it :D

Right mate by the looks of it you found the master socket, what you need to do now is STOP unplugging your router and changing sockets.Every time you unplug your router from the socket the DSLAM in the exchange sees that as a droped conection and an ustable line and reduces your line speed and increases your target SNR to compensate thats why your SNR has went from the normal 7 to 19.
At the minute you have two options!
1 leave your router pluged in and untouched for three days you will have to put up with the slow speed, after the three days reboot the router it should sync with the exchange at a higher speed because you havent been messing with the router. Keep doing this every three days till your speed wont get any higher .
2 Phone sky and beg and plead with them to retrain your line,if you get i really nice person they may do this. what they will do then is start the 10 day training period again to find the highest stable sync speed once again leave your router alone, sky are normaly unwilling to do this because it takes time and effort for them to do it.

With your line stats the way they are what you should get is
ADSL(up to 8 meg) sync 3785 and an ip profile of 3kbps
ADSL+/LLU(up to 20meg) sync 10311 and an ip profile of 9125
link to check for yourself http://www2.farina1.com/ADSL/default.aspx

sorry for the long winded post but i hope it helps you

i have also found this wesite also helps and explains a lot http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/maxdsl2.htm

Thanks a lot, ill try this! Also, my Noise Margin or whatever its called is back up to 18.9

Edit: Ugh....

Right, im gonna pester my dad to make sky improve my speed.

Okay, so what should I ask them exactly?

1. Not happy with my speeds
2. Ask to retest.

and is that it? I hope for the best?

Get your dad to ring up, pass the data protection routine and pass the phone over to you. Tell them that your sync speed is low and can you have your target SNR margin set to 7dB please.

Log into the router and monitor the sync speed, if the other person changes it you'll see the resync and be connected at a higher speed.

Okay thanks,

Now I gotta wait for my dad to get back from B&Q...

How do I say dB? Does it stand for anything or..?
