Sky Broadband Unlimited (20Mbps) but getting max 1.7mbps

Can anyone help?

My dad's paying for 20Mbps a month but when i go to speedtest.com the test shows that my speed is only at 1.7mbps

What do I do?

Could it be that my pc is slowing it down? I looked on the sky website and it said the max service I can get is 5.7mbps..

Also my pc specs:

Intel pentium 4 3.00ghz
Biostar p4m900-m7 motherboard
nvidia 7300 gt
And other very old parts

Yes it is wireless. I've got a router.

Don't know how to try it on a LAN connection :S

How long have you had the connection for?

I took out BT Broadband (same line as Sky) a few months ago. The 8meg package, but only got 1Mb/s. I phoned them up and they said that you only get 1Mb/s for the first week while they "establish" your connection, or something.

I've had it for at least 10 months

Speedtest.net's a crap benchmark of whether you're getting as fast as your connection can, but you realise it's up to 20Mbps depending upon how good your line is?
Look at what speed the Sky router says it's connected at, and go from there.

Ooh, how do I do that?
When I disable and enable my connection it says:

'Local Area Connection is now connected at 100mbps'

the local connection (100mbps) is between your laptop and your router, not your router and internet, you need to do this, Once connnected open up your internet browser and go to the following address: 192.168.0.1
You will be prompted for a username and password (they are admin - sky):
once in there it should tell you under connection status the speed you are connected at.

I'm not on a laptop, im on a desktop just to clarify

The first thing to do is to connect to the router and see what speed your actually connecting to the exchange at.

Sky default default details are:

Open up a web browser and navigate to 192.168.0.1
Username: admin
Password: sky

Look for show statistics under the router stats (normally on the first page displayed.)

Let us know what it says.

There is your problem, your only connecting to the exchange at 2mb

I would advise trying your router connected to the master socket and if your already using the master socket then try the test socket.

The master socket is, as the name suggests, the socket connected directly to what comes in from outside. All your extensions are connected to it, and it should have a BT logo on it somewhere.
The test socket's behind the faceplate of that socket (if you have a relatively modern one) and should eliminate any extensions you have wired in.

It's not working, basically I got two sockets behind my pc table. I tried plugging it into my other socket but the internet didnt even work then.

I'm stll stumped :\

he only has 41.5db attenuation, you should get allot more than 2 meg

I got 3.5meg from my 53db line!

You should be able to get more like 6-8meg from that line easy.

Give sky a call, you should be able to get allot more than what your getting, your stats are almost the same as hyperst and he gets 7meg.

Isn't there anything else I could do?

My dad is really REALLY busy atm and will be for the next few weeks, don't want to add more to his burden ;D

Take a picture of the two telephone sockets, you can usually tell which is the master.

I don't think that's the problem though, your line is easily capable of more, get sky to increase the speed.

Before you call sky you need to rule out it being an internal issue as if it was a sky issue I would expect to see a high noise margin.

Chances are the socket might not be near where the router currently is. You need to look for a socket which has a removable, detachable bottom to it which can be unscrewed.

Like this:

Unscrew the bottom and connect the router (with filter) directly to that.

While were discussing filters, make sure you have one on EVERY device which is connected to you're phone line.

Ahh, none of the sockets in my room have two parts to them

And yeah, all devices connected to my phone line have a filter on them

Im sure its not a problem with his line, he has 41db, you need to call.

Your proborly just set on the wrong speed, they should be able to bump the speed up easily.

what exchange are you on? Type your postcode or phone number into this and tell us what exchange

one thing i should add is that im using the sagem router, the dark grey one, heard about another kind that are not so good, which do you have

I suggest you look outside of your room could be behind something etc.

I just asked my dad and he says that I am connected to a master socket and that there are two other ones in my parents bedroom and my brothers bedroom. :S

Is the socket wired to something else?

Okay, find your master socket, are the phone lines overhead or underground?

If overhead, trace the cable back to the master socket.

Edit, i dont think you can have more than one master socket.

One of those sockets will be the master and will feed all of the others.

From my socket, its overground but then it goes underground and I don't know where it goes from there

Check the other sockets to make sure they don't look like the one I posted, if they don't and your sure there is not one elsewhere its possible you might have an older style master socket but check the others first.

They're all the same , i.e. they dont look like your one but are the same as the one behind my pc table

From the looks of things you have a master socket and a few extensions that you call master sockets.

The master socket will proborly have allot of wires in it, one of which goes outside, the rest to the extensions.

Yes should only be one master socket unless its been very badly wired up, we originally had two master sockets which was causing all kinds of issues speed wise until I resolved it

No, my little bro's pc has got my connection as well. Thing about his one is that he's got that belkin wireless adaptor installed.

The other problem is, is that next to my parents bed is a bedside table and behind that is the master socket. So would putting the router there like interfere with the connection or something?

Also, if I ran a wire from my bedroom to the parents room, it'd be too messy, me and my mum dont like messy Besides the wire isnt long enough

Edit: Just bought the wireless adaptor, ill be able to see if my internet improves with my new pc that comes tomorrow
