Sky Broadband

I have had an email saying I can get the free skybroadband however to keep my place in the queue I have to migrate within 10 days. I have requested a MAC from Eclipse and they are dragging their feet. Taken 3 days just to get a response.

You best be quick... if you don't get that MAC in 7 days they are going to wag their finger and close the door in your face arent they :p ;)

I'm very interested in this, my auntie and uncle currently have a 56k dial up internet connection, they subscribe to sky, can they get sky broadband, their local exchange supports the following:

BT Wholesale ADSL
BT Wholesale ADSL Max
BT Wholesale SDSL
Bulldog LLU
Tiscali LLU

They wont use the internet that often, just the odd bit of browsing and checking emails, so they would probably go for the free 2Mbit, 2GB monthly cap option.

How did you find out what their local exchange can support?? sorry if that seems like a noob question :o

thanks for that, looks like I have:

BT Wholesale ADSL
BT Wholesale ADSL Max
BT Wholesale SDSL
Tiscali LLU

I guess no one has it yet then, Bummer getting hacked off with BT, fed up with trying to talk to some dude in india for technical help.
Question, if i can only get about 2.3mb download spped from bt adsl max at the moment will i get better speeds from sky broadband?
I guess they use the same line from my house to the exchange, and just rent the line/equipment at the exchange end from bt etc?
My exchange Horsham Carfax is LLU enabled.

No.

You might get slightly more throughput because you're not tied by the half Mbps steps of the BRAS cap with Max, but that's it.

Finally got my MAC code from Eclipse. Applyed on the 23rd August and its taken till today to get it. I have one day left to sign up to Sky before I go to the back of the queue.

Keep you posted if itys any good or not.

Does anyone know when the service will become active? I want to get this for my house in bristol but I can't really be left too long without an internet connection.

depends on which exchange you are on
Has it been activated anywhere yet? I'll be on the Clifton exchange in Bristol. I know it's LLU for Easynet so I'm hoping it should be available there soon.

Okay im going to clear up a few misconceptions I see anywhere sky broadband is mentioned. (due to there lack of info to customers) these are some I have read from forums, I know the correct info for.

  • You can get in 28% of the uk at the moment 60% by january is what we are told.
  • It is ADSL/ADSL2 as with any other provider it used BT lines.
  • You can get it on ukonline and easynet exchanges so far, if you are offnet its connect only
  • speeds are upto 16mb but you must be no further than 2km from exhange for any chance of that.
  • The software that comes with it is device drivers, the internet browser, and free mcafee security suite with anti virus.
  • The mcafee can be used on upto 3 pc's for 12 month's
  • You must use the provided Sly broadband box (rebranded netgear DG834GT)
  • The router firmware auto updates itself, nothing on your pc is touched (couple of paranoid people ask that lol)
  • It uses wpa u cannot use WEP firmware does not accept that, all other options except password for access sky can be changed.
  • Wireless is supported using WG111 and WG111t usb dongles, if you have your own its upto you to get it to work (unlikely though)
  • they are selling the wg111t at £20 so far cheaper than anywhere online.

If you need to know anymore or anything else let me know, think I have coverd the basics.

People need to understand the difference between the Sky *By* Broadband (movies download service) as linked to before and Sky Broadband (the high speed internet service). Sky Broadband does *not* install p2p, as stated it's an ADSL based connection of one variation or another.

If you choose to install Sky *By* Broadband then yes in order for you to get movies/sports etc you have to install the download service software that is p2p based (as this is the most economical distribution method for Sky). The UPLOAD bandwidth that celliott is adament is being stolen is the same upload bandwidth Kazza/edonkey/BT etc would use while downloading a file (unless you are a leech and insist on preventing the client from uplaoding?) and not part of your usage allowance but it's strictly an opt in service - if you don't install Sky *By* Broadband then you don't have an issue. If we are going to get uber picky then yes a very small ammount of download quota would be used for ack's etc but i'd not loose any sleep over it.

Also you only get the content from the service you subscribe to eg Sky Movies, if you subscribe to Sky Movies 1 & 2, Sky Sports, if you subscribe to Sky Sports 1 & 2 so whoever had the idea of takign a basic sub and getting the movies may want to re-think that one.

Hope this clears things up a little!

Hey thanks for the info. So in theory any wifi card/dongle should be compatible but it's not guarunteed? It would just be a bit of a pain if everyone in my house had to get new wireless equipment when they have it all built into their laptops. Also I'm guessing it has wired ports, would be stupid if it didn't.

Sorry for late response.

Yes theres a 12 month term, you have 8 days after your activation to cancel.

And yes its a bit hit and miss at the moment with regards to wifi dongles and cards, but basicly if you have a belkin and dont install there nasty software your in with a chance, most netgears work and some dlinks. tech lines just wont help you.

I have more info on what is and isnt locked out of the box if you guys need specifics.

4 wired ports aswell.
