Sky customers be warned

they only store your IP address for a maximum of 12 months, apparently.

True, but as soon as Sky are advised of thee pending court hearing they have to immediately record all the IP addresses and who they're connected to and then store them pending the outcome of the hearing.

Sky don't hand over any information unless compelled to by court order.

I don't believe I have given permissions for Sky to hand over my details to a third party

also, an IP doesn't prove anything

IP does not equal a human being

anyone in my house, or anyone within the distance of my wifi signal could be guilty. Since my house is near a busy road, that would be thousands of people

That's irrelevant, where there is good reason to suspect that you have broken the law, Sky are legally obligated to hand over your details. That's why these speculative invoices can be created in the first place.

I have a question. How would they be able to tell who it was that did the downloading? I have 5 different devices connected to my network at any one time all used by different people so in this scenario who will be culpable?

Also, what if my network did not have a password and anyone was able to connect?

They cant prove anything, seriously this has come up so many times and its all scare tactics. Some of the law firms have even been suspended due to it, its that dodgy!

If you get a letter just ignore it. The moment you even try to communicate with these people you are screwed.
It isnt a coincidence that they release these letters near christmas!

I just don't see how they could possibly inforce this. Say I have a party of 20 people who all connect to my Wi-Fi. The only details Golden Eye have is the public IP, not the 20 plus devices behind. I wont keep a history of which device initiated this so at the demark point its impossible to prove.

For me this clearly scare tactics and I will be surprised if anything goes to court. Just glad I'm not on sky anymore.

This. Even if you do get a letter just ignore it. If anyone ever asks why you didn't respond just deny even having received it, because I doubt they are sending the letters by a method that can be tracked/requires a signature.
