Sky Fibre Optic

Anyone know what caused the outage or was a it planned maintenance ?

Things that I've noticed is that we're now connected directly to google now instead of some crazy sky proxies and user harvesting.

Interesting. I wonder if that had something to do with Gmail running like treacle the past couple of days and now it seems back to normal.

BT have been, no obvious fault shown, but he did terminate my incoming connection to the master socket.

Now getting
Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 39997 kbps 9997 kbps
Line Attenuation 17.1 dB 0.0 dB
Noise Margin 11.8 dB 14.14 dB

Stable since he left but then that was only an hour ago.

And I am still having problems, I am not longer getting loads of disconnections but my connected speeds are dire

Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 17998 kbps 3695 kbps
Line Attenuation 17.4 dB 0.0 dB
Noise Margin 26.1 dB 28.28 dB

Been reporting it as often as I can and was due to have my 4th OR engineer out today, but surprise surprise they didnt show, so a day off wasted.

Complained to Sky but cannot get another appointment booked until the 30th as cannot have another day off before then and there are no weekend appointments (which is a stupid stupid thing for home connections).

All I want is OR to start replacing some of the physical parts of my connection as it is so clearly a physical line fault, but getting them to do that seems to be an impossibility, even though some of the cable from the cabinet to my master socket is over 30 years old!!!

Ask the next engineer if he can talk to the DCoE. That's like their 'tier 2' support. They may be able to suggest something or authorise a lift and shift at the cab if they're sure there's nothing wrong with the line.

That's a lot of noise.

I agree, as do the sky people (who to be fair have been generally very good), but OR just don't seem to see it.

You both probably know this already, but noise margin isn't the level of noise - it's a measure of 'headroom' indicating how strong the signal is relative to the noise. A high noise margin is a generally good thing.

It looks like you've got an intermittent problem where DLM is reducing the sync speeds to try to maintain a stable connection, and as a result the noise margins look high. I've had this problem in the past with a badly made connection in one of the cabinets, but it could be caused by intermittent noise generated locally (REIN).

A bit of software called Routerstats can be useful - it can plot sync speed and noise margin over time and help see how stable the line is.

Wonko - Yes normally noise margin is as you describe, but weirdly on sky that never seems to be the case and a lower noise margin on their routers seems to be a good thing.

Just lost my telephone line and at the same time my internet disconnected and now I am synced as follows

Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 17998 kbps 3695 kbps
Line Attenuation 33.4 dB 0.0 dB
Noise Margin 11.2 dB 13.13 dB

oops as I was typing my telephone came back and I resynced to

Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 17998 kbps 3695 kbps
Line Attenuation 17.4 dB 0.0 dB
Noise Margin 25.9 dB 20.20 dB

Meant to be connected today but we have no internet at all now. We were told that we needed nothing for it to work but I'm sure that we would need an open reach modem. We have the small black sky router.

VDSL modem is built into the router Mike. Replace the microfilters and just plug it in like you would with ADSL. Username and password etc are pre-configured.

Hi, I'm not sure I quite follow... a low noise margin is a good thing from the point of view that with DLM it indicates that you've got a stable line and likely getting the maximum sync speed for your line. But if your sync speed is achieving the capped speed then the higher the noise margin the better.

Your line attenuation jumping up and down suggests to me that you've got a bad connection somewhere between your modem and the cabinet. When I had a similar problem it turned out to be a scotch connector in the cabinet that hadn't been crimped properly. Hope you manage to get it sorted quickly.

So about a month ago I moved to fibre pro my garunteed speed was 65 but only been getting a sync of 59 and throughput of about 55. Called sky on sunday the lady worked through all her processes and could only get me to 64 sync. She then said an engineer would be needed to resolve and booked me one for this tuesday. Have to say very impressed with customer services last time i had a fault it took BT 6 months before they admitted an engineer was needed and that was for a much worse fault than this ( should have been getting 18 but was getting 1.5)

Got open reach out Saturday morning who discovered our line was plugged into someone else's internet. Simple fix now gone from 5down and 0.9 up to 75 down and 19.5 up. :D

So whats the best Sky Modern to get the black Sky hub or the Sky Q one ?

I opted for the Sky Q one and have no regrets. It is limited to 2 network ports, but for my setup that wasn't an issue and the better Wi-Fi is definitely worth it to me.

Sky Q if you intend on using the wireless provided or can make use of gigabit ethernet.

Only time I regretted it was 1:37am on Sunday morning when Sky upgraded the firmware while I was playing a racing sim online. So thanks for spoiling my teams iRacing Spa 24 hour race Sky...

So engineer has been he cant find any noticeable fault with the line during his tests. He's reset my connection and its now sync'd at 67 instead of 59 so that puts me over what sky said my minimum was. Happy enough with that to be honest enginneer showed me the cable route and the distance from my cabinet and its 265 metres so i think thats close to the maximum i can get
