Hi all just got hold of a new av receiver, connected sky Hdmi for picture and using optical for the sound. Does this not output in dolby?
When the Xbox is on picture and sound via Hdmi i get the Dolby light up, but when sky is on i get a pcm light. Is this right? Do different broadcasts send out dolby etc??

Thanks.

Are you using optical out from the Sky box or your TV? I got massive sync issues when I used optical out from the Sky box which were solved when I used the one from the TV.

And as above, Dolby is only transmitted with certain programmes to save bandwidth.

Using it from sky box to amp. Ahh right i see so its whatever the programme is broadcast in then? Not noticed any syncing issues so far.
Thought it was something i had done wrong.

Thanks for replys guys.

oddly enough my optical from my sky hd+ stopped working recently. it was still lightling up but my amp wasnt recognising it as a digital signal. swapped to coax and its been fine..

the amp should still report the signal as digital even if its not a broadcast in DD.

When sky is going through the amp its showing as PCM, when through Xbox 360 it shows the dolby sign (or something along those lines) Does that sound right? Im not too sure what the pcm means.

also when, you do get set it up over optical, the introduction voice(you know the 'whats next' voice) will come out of the stereo (L/R) speakers as opposed to the centre when the amp decodes stereo over HDMI. or theat could be just mine

bullit

The % of Sky customers connecting it to their HDMI AMP is going to be less than 2%. I can't see sky broadcasting their content is any HD sound format. Shame really :(

Have you set the amp to take the audio from the optical input rather than HDMI ?

The term "HD Sound" never got to the mainstream public. And Yes James.miller - HD sound to me is TrueHD and DTS-Master and to many others.

If you class HD sound as DD then its been around for ages in your sense. :)

but in the context of the OP, sky HD box's do not output DD over HDMI only over Optical, just saying ;)

bullit

I shall view a few different channels when i can get the other half away from watching X factor lol.
See if any of them are any better, will they show on the amp with the dolby sign or will it stay with the PCM?

Put sky on a film channel, if it's a DD film it will show it when you press the i button.

PCM is a 2 channel signal, my amp upmixes this to dolby prologic 2 will your amp not do this also ?

As far as I can see, no-one has mentioned changing the setting of the Sky box optical from Stereo (the default) to Dolby D. Iceman, have you done this?

Services > Settings > Sound > Digital Audio Output

Remember to confirm the setting before exiting. Try the audio delay on 20ms if your Sky box has the option.
