SKY HD

source?

not saying you are wrong and not surprised as it has all gone a bit quiet...

I was talking to sky subscription line this evening and they said april ( so that could well be June) but I reckon it will have to be launched well before the World Cup starts to get kit installed into pubs / clubs and homes - as I really think this will be the major reason for early adaptors to get it ( imho)

Sky have no rights to the world cup so would have to rely on ITV/BBC letting them show games - it's far from straightforward.

I spoke to Sky on Wednesday and they said it would be out in March but so many people have been told so many different things i dont belive what they told me for one second.
I think Sky want to keep it a secret untill they are ready, i also think that the world cup may have a big part in the launch of SkyHD but i bet they are still in talks with BBC and ITV regards showing the world cup as they both have the TV rights to show it in the UK.
The BBC have said that they would like to broadcast the world cup in HD and as SkyHD is going to be the main HD media (telewest dont cover enough of the country) id imagine that the BBC have had SkyHD in their plans for a while.
More and more channels are signing upto SkyHD all the time and i bet that on or just before the launch the BBC and ITV anounce that they will be starting HD broadcasts on SkyHD and this will lead to a worldcup HD announcment.
All speculation but who knows ?

Andy

theregister reckons april 1st after phoning the number displayed on skyHD9 and 10 channels for more info. ie the sky person on the other end of the line told them april 1.

Because it has to be paid for somehow. Skly+ and HD were/are premium services and the new equipment has to be subsidised by users.

April 1st ( you FOOLish or what?) laughs sorry couldnt resist

Yeah it could well be that kind of time frame

I realise BBC / ITV have rights to the World Cup but this will be such a MASSIVE audience, no one will turn it down, its in all party's interests to get it on Sky HD - BBC will generate income from selling it, Sky willl get bigger and more subscribers - ITV is a slightly different kettle of fish but still runs true ( i believe)

The ONLY hiccup i cansee is that because its such new technology the BBC may well want to charge too much ( to Sky) but as its a limited time scale and only a given number of matches (Sky undoubtedly will have rights to show some matches from its own deals) I cant see why Sky wouldnt try and get it done anyway - if the tech works

Always the case over here though, in the states they don't have to pay for HD broadcasting, surely charging £400 for a box and the £40 a month odd fee for sky makes up whatever they've spent on new transmitters etc etc.

I was thinking about it but not at that price, so if i want sky+ with sports channels, i have to pay £40 basic, plus £10 for the plus and another £10 for the HD.

Bit harsh imo.

Sky+ is rumoured to be going subscription free with the advent of HD, so it may well only be £40+ £10 for HD and the capabilities of Sky+.

If you had the sports channels you wouldnt have to pay the £10 sky+ fee, that charge is only if you dont have any premium channels.
There is a rumour that when SkyHD comes out the £10 sky+ fee will be dropped so only those on SkyHD will pay the extra subs and Sky+ will be the standard box with SkyHD being the premium box a bit like we have Sky digital and Sky+ now but normal Sky digital will be dropped.
When Sky+ came out everyone had to pay the £10 fee but that was then dropped if you had some of the premium channels (movies or sports), i imagine that the £10 fee will be dropped from SkyHD after a wile if you have certain packages.
Up to a point im willing to pay what ever it takes to get SkyHD, just im not sure what that point is yet...£400 + £10 per month maybe ?

woz talking to a guy I went to college with who is now a sky installer working direct 4 sky (in a simpsons van). He says they havent been told when the release date will be but he is hoping 4 lots of jobs just fitting the boxes and not climbing about putting dishes up.

I'm pretty sure they do since they need cable boxes to view HD, maybe not subscription but there are costs involved.

Indeed, all US HD services are delivered via premium satellite or cable services such as Dish network, DirecTV, Comcast etc.

They are all pay subscription models. The US has a lot of HD pay for view sports aswell.

Incidentally, George Bush signed the Digital switch off Mandate yesterday, 2009 is the analog switch off deadline. Theres not really any digital terrestrial service in the US (some pilot schemes), so I expect that airspace is going to be a great opportunity for the TV providers to rollout digital terrestrial HD.

This bodes well for the UK getting HD freeview at some point in the future.
