*** Sky Q Thread ***

Mine was installed yesterday morning, overall, pretty happy so far.

Few little teething issues. Will be moving the mini box around the house and will also be hard wiring it later.

Some of the recording options have vanished, like padding, selecting a time to watch from, but generally it's significantly better than the old HD box. Nicely zippy too.

Touch remote is pretty nasty, but it works, mostly.

Don't like how it defaults to the menu. Oh, and the SkyQ app would be great to have on my phone, but tablets only at the moment.

glad to hear your happy, i have got a week until mine installs. will be interested to see how it compares. I mainly want it so i can see my recordings in all rooms.

Any one tried connecting their Ipad via VPN to watch recordings from the silver box whilst out your network ? I was hoping this would work but annoyingly my Sonos unit does not over 3/4g VPN only if im on wifi. The app must know im not on wifi.

Can you come back and let us know how switching the mini box to Ethernet goes? Have seen conflicting reports online about this and is something I'd be looking at doing too.

It'll be a couple of weeks before I do change it. We've just moved house and my 'office' is still in boxes and the room it's going into is still pink... Ugh... Oh, and there's no desk or other furniture.

Still have to sneak in the arcade cabinet at some point... ;)

[edit]
Been watching some recorded and streaming video... That blue Q on the front is WAY too bright.

Had mine installed on Saturday - few thoughts/grumbles:

- Multiple button presses to get to the TV Guide - WTF!?!?!
- Channel change up/down is reversed when simply viewing up/down!?!?
- Search function a bit long winded (will hopefully improve when the voice search is enabled!)
- Remote control not quite "long" enough - I find it a little awkward to hold the remote in one hand when using my thumb to press the numbers at the bottom! (Oddly balanced)

On the whole it's OK I guess, nothing too ground-breaking but a fresh look and feel will always take some getting used to!

I don't like the touch remote I might start using the button version. I have an engineer coming early May to sort out a clicking disk (that old chestnut) let's hope it's not bigger issue although I've seen other complain.
Andi.

So a week on my only real grumble is the touch control which I'm lumbered with as my wife won't use. You'll end up with RSI trying to scroll one handed using your thumb. The fast forward/rewind is too sensitive and I keep managing to trigger it when I pick the thing up. As I said before it is just a gimmick. I'll persevere for a few more weeks with it.

I still have an original Sky HD box from 2006 which is on it's last legs and becoming increasinly flaky. It crashes all the time requiring a power/power off an dfrequently fails to update the progam guide so recordings often fail. I'm trying to decide whether I should order Sky Q or buy a cheap/second hand Sky HD box with built in wi-fi to replace it?

A new Sky HD box is around £200 from Sky themselves so it doesn't really make sense to buy direct from them as far as I can see.

Do you guys with it reckon Sky Q is worth the £150 install and another £20 onto my monthly bill?

2nd hand sly hd boxes can be had for dirt cheap. I'd simply grab yourself a newer Amstrad HD box second hand for around 30 quid.

As Jamesyboyjim says, the boxes are not worth anything much on eBay. Expect to pay around £30 for an Amstrad DRX890 (The latest standard sky issue box).

Having some serious issues with the HDMI controls on my Sony TV with the new Sky Q box plugged in!

I used to be able to use my Sony remote with my Intel NUC running Kodi as well as my soundbase kicking in perfectly when switching inputs but with the Sky Q box plugged in it's all random and very hit and miss as to whether either work now!

I've tried turning HDMI control on and off on the Sky box but it doesn't seem to make any difference!!??!!

Very annoying to say the least, especially when they all worked perfectly when the old Sky HD box was plugged in!

There are quite a few issues with HDMI and ARC. Boxes not coming out of standby when connections are changed, devices not working under control.

Switching off Dolby sound both HDMI and Optical can make a change to ARC control.

I'm fairly sure that I've already got the HDMI set to "Normal" although there is a possibility that the optical setting is still on Dolby - I don't think I changed it because I'm not using the optical connection!
