*** Sky Q Thread ***

We are really thinking of getting Sky Q Silver with movies and sports as well. Being able to watch a programme while you record 4 others is a huge upgrade because we are constantly running out of channels we can record on Virgin Media at the moment. Only being able to record 3 channels just isn't enough. Plus with Sky Q we can get Sky TV upstairs as well which will be really good.

The only thing I worry about is the stupid touch sensitive controller which sounds awful. Can you get an extra one of the standard controllers to replace it?

Once you get used to the touch controller it's not to bad although it is quiet sensitive

I just looked how much I would pay if I went for the new sky Q setup with the same Sky package I have now

MY currant sky package with multi room + sky movies + HD pack is £57.83
SKY Q with the same package £74  plus a £149 installation charge

It would be an extra £16.17 per month (Not counting the £149 installation charge) if I changed to sky Q

Here a screen shot below of my lastest sky bill (Just in case i miss something)

Cancelled my Sky Q yesterday and am going back to standard Sky HD in a week and a half!

It was just too many little issues that I can't justify spending £7 a month more for to be honest!

Credit to Sky though - I assumed they would just be plugging my old 2 boxes back in as I kept hold of them but without me even asking I was told I'd be getting 2 brand new boxes - 1 x 2TB box to replace the old 1TB box I had in the living room and a Sky HD WiFi box to replace the old non-WiFi one in the bedroom!

Result! :D

Is it really that much though? Yes the entry price is higher but you get the same channel pack as you would with the full Family HD on regular Sky. If you add Sports and Movies then it's £88.50 a month but that's actually not much more than normal sky would cost with the same package and a second box.

Thats the problem its the same price as Sky HD thereabouts if you dont have any discounts.
I pay £28 a month for everything. I got this after I cancelled Sky as an enticement back. Its for 18 months. Why would I then "upgrade" to Sky Q which gives me no benefits but for an extra £60 a month.
Its doomed to failure with the current pricing plan.

Had mine installed today (Q silver + 2 mini boxes) I feel totally conned on the install costs. It took no longer than an hour to change the LMB and change the boxs (even used the old HDMI cables and power leads) so what they hell are the install costs for ? £99 per mini box.... It was a case of plug it in and press the WPS button.... Im a little lost.

Are you referring to the £99 for the additional mini box? Given that this is a one-off cost with no additional monthly payment, I think that's a pretty good deal!

The offers will come soon enough, once they're done milking the early adopters. Even so the deals won't be as cheap as the +HD retention deals simply because it's their new "premium" service.

LOL yeah of course it is

You seem to forget that the vast majority of Sky customers pay the ticket price, end of. The more savvy may negotiate and cancel to get a better deal but they represent but a tiny fraction of the overall customer base. The average person will pay ticket price or perhaps have a small "loyalty" discount and thus the differential between +HD and Q is far smaller.

the contract clearly states that the "kit" is owned by sky and only rented to us as part of the deal. so if you cancel the contract they take all the kit back. I was told that the £99 was for the time it takes to install..... it took less than 5 mins all he did was press the WPS button on both. I think its very very cheeky they are claiming a £99 "install" cost when its clearly to pay for the item that they are only "lending" me.

When mine was installed he had to change the LMB on the dish a it's got 12 tuners - I always assumed the install cost was primarily for that!

The install fee is a flat charge to cover all eventualities. Some people with existing installations will just need the LNB swapped whereas others will need a whole new dish putting up and cables run. It's too much hassle to tailor the install charge depending on how much work is involved so they just do a flat rate. Does mean that those who just need a new LNB are kind of subsidising the fresh installs a bit.

I'm actually paying only £10 for what will be a totally fresh install with a new dish - bargain! :)

Had a couple of issues with the touch remote over the last couple of days sending phantom touches. Which considering that I'm using the non-touch remote is annoying as I had to find the other remote.

Had the program info popping up, how far into a program appearing, pausing, fast forwarding....

Pulled the batteries from the remote and reinserted and all is well again.

The more I use Sky Q, the more I'm convinced that I've done the right thing in going back to regular Sky HD!

It's so annoying having to forward through a show at x30 rather than just starting at a pre-determined point - even the left and right actions are fiddly because the time bar has to be on screen for it to work!

I'm sure these annoyances will get sorted with future firmware updates but I don't particularly want to be a Sky beta tester in the meantime!

5 Mins....Crickey...I take it the sky engineer lives next door and walked round with his tools etc....

So does it work like a conventional Sky Box and receive everything through the satellite dish or does everything come via broadband?:o

How they market the charge isn't relevant. At the end of the day, you're paying £99 to have another mini box which gives you full access to your system from another room indefinitely. Pretty good deal if you ask me and far preferable to their +HD multiroom offerings.
