Sky Stream - Launches *NOW* (post #1 for pricing / page #5 for pics)

Had a few crashes on the disney+ app last night whilst watching Andor. In testing, it only does it when set to 4K, in HD mode it's fine.

Maybe it's my wifi, but for some reason the box has now found my 5ghz band so I've moved over to that now.

Will go back to 4K and see how it goes.

Despite my reservations, it is easier to use the Mic button and just say Sky Sports rather than finding it on the guide.

Going on how it uses the apps, can you sign into any of them? Like does it have BT sport and can you sign in with it?

Does the box do Dolby Vision?

Yes, they are normal apps where you can signin and out. No BT sports app, you have to subscribe to BT through the sky store app.

Yes to dolby vision.

also, iplayer does support 4K

Cheers for this mate.

I just look at the deals you can get once you’re signed up with Now-like I’m paying £4.99 a month for Entertainment for 6 months with £2 Boost. You add in UHD Netflix and it still works out cheaper that what you’d be paying for with this.

I dunno. Guess I’m just too used to the streaming services that going back to long term contracts seems a bit archaic at this point.

Only 30 day contracts mate. The discounts are valid for 18 months, but still only 30 days contracts. I think the higher cost is worth it personally. There's far better choice through sky stream over now tv, plus the quality is on a different level. Might be worth trying it, as you can always cancel.

Oh yeah it’s all down to personal preference at the end of the day. Just looking at it, a 31 day contract just doing Ultimate plus UHD Netflix (£8 upgrade) would be £37. Entertainment with Boost (with my deal) plus UHD Netflix for me at present is £23. Is Stream £14 better? I’d argue that it isn’t. But again, everyone’s situation/circumstances are different.

Maybe if they lowered the prices I’d give it a go but as it stands I think it’s a pass for us.
Id get on the blower, see if you can thrash out a deal

Well mine arrived this morning. What a heap of junk. Image quality is crap. UI is glitchy, slow and live HD channels are sharper via Freeview HD. UHD is OK but I'm seriously not impressed.
If they'd put the UHD streams on NOW I'd pay for them, but this box is seriously unimpressive. It's completely screwed the CEC with my other kit connected to my amp too. It's a trash fire.

Somethings not right, mine is miles better than Now TV which I was using before stream. I'm really impressed with it. That said, I have come from a combination of the TVs own TV guide and Now TV...although, a couple of years ago I did have Sky Q which I don't rate personally. We could never get the mini box to work reliably. I'd say stream is the best TV I've had so far. Nice TV guide, easy to find stuff, and the box is nice and fast, no lag on mine.

Not all good though.....

One out of the three boxes has died which is being swapped out tomorrow. It's ok for a while, then it just goes black with a white flashing light. Reset it twice now, and it always ends up the same.

Minor annoyance there’s now ads when watching shows on demand. You can fast forward them but it’s a bit annoying trying to be sold a Volvo every 15 minutes.

This is winding me up!! It was bad enough having ads at the start, but now they put them into the actual show itself.

as mentioned before, I'm wondering if pihole can do it? Might be worth looking into

HOW MUCH!!! forget that, I'll get a mini PC and install linux on it

Skys got really angry at me for finding out how to block ads on sky stream, so removing this post

Note to sky, stop putting ads everywhere!!!!!

Premier league football and F1 is pretty much the only reason I'm paying for sky...and only due to account sharing with parents so we go 50/50

I know there are ways to get F1 through F1 TV, but unsure about the football?

Q is a superior technology

Not true. 4K HDR is only available on the main box, not minis so being able to watch 4K in another room is not possible. The biggest differences is the recording, but with catch up being as good as it is, it only really applies to recording the odd channels not on catch up.

also, the mesh technology used is absolute garbage to the point we unplugged the minis 6 months into an 18 month contract and went to freeview/now whilst the contract ran down. No amount of messing about with network settings, home plugs, drilling holes to run CAT6 worked.

Stream hasn't been without its issues, but that's mainly down to broken remotes, flakey hardware and firmware bugs. Most of which have now been resolved, so it's pretty good albeit not perfect (it's expensive, but that's sky for you). Personally I'd have preferred a sky app instead of having the box just for streaming, like Now TV but with all the channels.

Granted, if you are a large family with crap internet it might be a different story.

That said, if I was single and living on my own I'd cancel the lot......I despise sky, but I am outnumbered so reluctantly paying £70 a month for everything. The only saving grace is the family&friends subscription sharing, so I share with two other households and share the cost. Considering you get Netflix/Paramount/Discovery it's a pill I can just about swallow.

I've even tried plex/wintv/hdhomerun/aura solutions but it's just not as slick.

I'm curious if I should seek a discount. I'm paying monthly, so I don't have an 18-month contract reduction. I like the service, but it is very expensive so saving some money would be good. Should i say to Sky that I'll cancel and see what they say?

I phoned up, they told me no discount :(

So I could add the program after it's aired and then watch it immediately? If I have to do it before then it's no different to Q and adding it as a recording.

Yeah, I'd like to prove the point though and put it to the test. I checked the TV guide and the only live rugby I could see for Saturday morning was this one

Sat 5th Aug
03:25am - 05:35am
Sky Sports Action

Live International Rugby Union
New Zealand vs Australia

Checked Sky stream, and it is available to watch

Odd one, had Stream Pucks delivered today, 2 for us (main living-room, main bedroom) and another for the inlaws annex adjacent to our property, for some odd reason their subtitles don’t seem to work, even when I set them to on within the settings, our main tv doesn’t seem to work with subtitles either, but the bedroom does? Done some research and it appears to be a common issue? Tried the normal power off, restart etc but nothing seems to work their side! Next thing I’ve read is a factory reset which I’ll try tomorrow
Those boxes are full of bugs. Best to factory reset, fixes a lot of issues.

From a lightweight dig around of posts it seems Stream although the future could do with V2 hardware/updates and in the meantime SkyQ remains the best option for 4K/UHD etc if you already have it. Seem about right or should I 'OMG get off Q and onto Stream"?

I was quite keen as we have Gig FTTP now but reviews seem very mixed.

Whilst not perfect, stream is a damn site better than Q ever was
