*** Sky TV Cancellation & Negotiation Thread ***

Trying to sort out my parents SKY that i would imagine they are being bent over with as they are the type to just leave contracts to expire and never renew etc.

Is there still an established method for getting a best deal with threatening to cancel? I remember reading a few years back about starting the process to cancel, getting an offer to stay, reject that then go to retentions team or something like a 3 stage plan to the best deal?

Yeah that was how i did it last time. But i am due to do that again soon so 17 months ago now.

Mine has just cancelled. Usually there's a phone call before it gets cut off asking to do a deal which isn't typically that great but this time all I got was a text asking to call them. There's nothing online offering any win back deals and not had any calls since.

Every year the agents usually say "you'll never get a deal like that again" and within weeks I'm back on a deal like I had, for 10 years. To get the best deal you have to lose the service, but this can restrict what you're left renewing with. There was a lot of pressure on my account last time to "upgrade" to skyQ, but it was an additional cost with no benefit and the agent was disappointed I wouldn't accept their fantastic offer.

I'm going through the same process, put my 31 days notice in 3 weeks ago, not had 1 single call from them trying to persuade me to keep with them.

maybe this is a new tactic from them.. wanting us to flinch before they do? Either way mine is gone a week tomorrow!

Same here. Cancelled on January 21st and surprised that they haven't called.

Not that it would matter, since I actually wanted to cancel and am moving to a new provider.

Just got the price rise email, nearly 20% increase and now £2 a month for the privilege of HD in 2023. F1TV via VPN once my contract is up, Sky can jog on.

No brainer for F1 really, (~£16) for a year using a VPN, and either connect machine to TV, or cast it via Chrome Cast. It'll cost less than the £24 you'll pay for the HD charge alone :D

Lol, 2 months ago I told them I couldn’t afford more than £100 a month, so they did me a deal and got it down to £97. Two months later and it’s back over £100 ffs.

HDHomeRun ordered, going to test it out via Plex (which will allow recording) and also the native app. Also dug out an RF cable for the Freeview and checked it, it's picked up loads of channels. Haven't tested the F1 app yet but I'm confident it'll work just fine. Should save over £700 a year which will cover the insurance on both cars. The only downside is my mrs is adamant on Netflix and we have the ultra family package thing so that'll be £16 a month but still a decent saving and no more renewal negotiations.

Which country do you set your VPN at to get it for that price. I had it last year with VPN set to USA and it was £7 a month via the Google Play store.

My package for Signature TV with UHD netflix and superfast BB (70 Meg) was heading up to 93.50 at end of fixed term which is taking the mick.

Through to cancellation and was offered 64 for like for like package or 57.50 to downgrade the netflix to basic (because I don't even have a 4k TV, sharing account with brother but don't need to continue that).

Can't compete value wise with BTs offer of Entertainment + Fibre at 40 quid a month. Sky did their best to convince me how shoddy BT is in comparison, and while I'm sure the EPG isn't as nice and we're losing access to thousands of useless channels, I'm pretty sure we'll live, so just cancelled and will sign up with BT in the morning.

Let us know how you get on with this. I've got a telly in our kitchen that isn't connected to an aerial and is used entirely over fire stick for netflix / amazon / disney / plex / iptv. I'd like to plug a currently unused aerial in to a homerun box in the lounge, and then make that accessible over Plex so my kitchen telly can watch terrestrial. My NAS has an app called tvheadend that apparently allows you to record stuff too.

It's working fine. You can disable whatever channels you want (there's a lot of guff with Freeview) via the HDHomeRun web interface (functional, but basic) so that you don't have to do that on every device that's consuming its service.

I've disabled the above, as either I'm not interested in them or there's HD versions. Then add it into Plex and it'll map all the channels for you. There's plenty of guides out there showing how it's done but it's pretty simple.

It does take a second or two for the cannel to start 'streaming' from the HDHomeRun but apart from that it looks and sounds perfectly fine. If you have a Plex Pass subscription, you can record stuff too and you can schedule stuff by browsing forward through the EPG.

Certainly not as straight forward or plug and play as a Sky Q box I admit, but also far cheaper in the long run especially if you can consume other streaming services for your viewing. Apart from Sports, all we watch is BBC or ITV mainly, which can also be watched using their apps on an Apple TV or fire stick anyway.

The one thing I miss about Sky (literally 1 thing) is their EPG. It is superb.

Thanks for this. I do indeed have a plex pass. It's already set up on my NAS with 40tb of storage. I'm likely to get this sorted if I can fix my aerial. This looks super neat. Thank you!

Oh - Does it do EPG stuff for you, or do you need another external XML source for that?

Luckily my aerial is in situ and working.

I have no idea why it's taking a good 10-15 seconds to start watching, I'll have a proper look into it when I have more time, but, it works (eventually). It might be a 'Plexism' or just the way the box works.
