Sky UK launching HDR Wednesday 27th May.

Is there a thread elsewhere discussing peoples opinion/experiences of the sky HDR PQ, and the degree that their tv's give good rendering of HLG ?

you could, cynically, think hdr was introduced in Italy, first, because customer base was newer, and they mostly had compatible boxes, whereas for the uk, the customer base had older incompatible machines, so sky waited until newer boxes were owned by a majority of the population.

(despite the small amount of content currently) how do they avoid a contract breach legal action from customers ?
say, hypothetically, if they significantly reduced availible (non-hdr) 4k content, at what point could you complain
There's probably something on AVForums about it. They love a good picture discussion.

What I find frustrating about Sky is the lack of streaming UHD. At least I assume you have to download and watch it or am I doing something wrong?

They’ve never done a pure streaming service, it’s always been download and save to hard drive, watch from there. Netflix excepted though! If your download speed is sufficient that the box can download faster than you can watch then you can start watching almost immediately. Obviously for UHD you’ll need 20-25Mbps or better to do that.

.... As the link, also showed, I meant whether netflix hdr material can be downloaded, not on Q box, but another device,
and, so, circumvent/avoid the bitrate reduction.

I assume the £50 is without strings , like a 12month lock-down too.

turns out with Netflix you cannot download 4k/hdr stuff just 1080, so SkyQ is unique

have you read the thread , for context.

Yes, it was assumed that using the download feature on Netflix through the mobile / pc app *could* bypass the bitrate restriction, however it seems you get the 1080p version using this method. Nothing to do with this thread I might add.

Then for some reason you pointed out that sky Q is unique but didn't elaborate as to why so I assumed (shoot me for the assumption) that you meant Netflix was unique as it downloaded 4k content as opposed to the other thought that I had at the comment that you meant Sky Q was unique as it downloaded 4k HLG content.

For those moaning about old sky 4k boxes not having hdr, I’ll go back in time to when dvd came out... first gen only had Dolby digital. And then we had dts. Same with 4k TVs.... bog standard hdr... HLG and DV came later.

you get in early.....you miss out on improvements.

When we're the first DTS DVD's out as the players supported it in the late nineties.

I bought the Samsung 709 in either 98 or 99 and that had DTS. My Sony 725d from 99 had it too. But my skyQ box from 2016 doesn't have HLG (on topic :p)

Well the panny a100 was the 2nd DVD player released in the uk. I had when it came out and it was modded to play US discs. I’m 100% certain I bought it Oct 98 as I had the receipt for years in a drawer lol. Only reason I swapped it was because I bought Galaxy Quest from the USA and that was dts .
