Guys seems fitting to ask here.

So has anyone binned Sky and subsequently had to used Channel 4 for there F1 fix ?

Sky’s just becoming far to expensive these days .

Having watched The SkyF1 channel since its inception I’m regularly just fast forwarding to Lights out and away we go - I feel the channel has become like a PC from PC world - just full of bloat ware .

Pre race aside - Crofty , Brundle , and Kravits ( prefer Lenny ) do a good job with live commentary but I’m just on the pause button going over to Coutahrd and Jaques .

Help me make up my mind please ?

What are you asking us to help you with? You're comparing the coverage of C4 vs Sky when C4 only have the race highlights later on in the day. So surely Sky's coverage is fairly irrelevant?

Sounds like it's more a decision for you to make on whether you want to pay the price to watch the races live vs watching highlights. Don't see how any of us can make your mind up on that?

There you go , reason I put the post up . Didn’t know CH 4 was highlights only , thought it was live .

I gave up on Sky ages ago and watch directly via the F1 TV Pro app now.

I have to use a VPN, but seeing as I'm paying for the content I'm viewing - I feel morally justified in bypassing Skys exclusive rights to rip off UK F1 fans.

Always enjoyed Brundle's commentary. C4 coverage got nobbled, it is getting better as the highlights are now longer, last year was dreadful as they got hit by the Sky juggernaut. Its been relaxed this year.

I really enjoy C4 coverage albeit, Coulthard and Webber (being linked to Red Bull), there is tone of slight bias, Max is the demigod.

I like watching a coherent race without massive bits chopped out making it impossible to follow :D

Listening to crofty one would think the drivers had changed cars every other lap :D

Crofty-Martin I've just heard from Rachel that it is snowing in the Antarctic, it could come here with 5 laps to go.
Martin- Oh yes crofty

I ditched Sky a couple of years ago and will not be going back. The C4 show is highlights with loads of pre and post race commentary. Personally I record the show and then skip to the race missing all the waffle. The best bit about C4's coverage is I don't have to listen to that idiot Croft.

I binned Sky off a couple of months ago.

Personally, it is far superior than C4 and I don't have a problem with Crofty, Brundle or Kravitz.

But Sky was taking the urine on prices and I only had Sky for the F1.

I did look into the whole DNS and F1 Subscription service but didn't seem to get it working so lost interest.

Sky is better but costs way too much.

I used NowTv to get Sky coverage more selectively using their Sky Sports pass, which is more reasonable, but it's still expensive. C4 is pretty OK for highlights and that's actually how I watched the 2020 season as I didn't think it was going to be a great season anyway and I have a lot less time on my hands nowadays to sit down for 2-3hrs and watch racing (unfortunately).

I like everything about the c4 coverage (not sure with the new team change for next year)

I'd never pay for sky for f1. But seen a couple of races from it. So can compare.

Reasons.
I don't even have a TV licence so cost would be disgusting
I prefer the c4 light hearted approach
I like highlights :
-f1 is on at such an unfriendly time I'm not sacrificing my Saturday and Sunday to see what is often a boring race. My hobbies are day time.
-f1 races are often boring. Highlights makes them seem much better. You miss all the dull bits.

Without the cost.. I'd still watch it on c4.

I'm in the unusual (it seems) situation of enjoying football, NFL and basketball on Sky sports so I think the cost is reasonable for having such good coverage. I get that you wouldn't think this if not. I don't mind Crofty but he does get over excited, MB is great though and Simon Lazenby has got progressively better as he learnt more about F1. Not a fan of C4 commentary tbh.

Brundle is 50% of what he used to be. When he started in the 90s through early 2000s he was relevant, edgy and as sharp as a tack. He's still better than most, but he's a neutered version of what he was even 10 years ago and frankly Coulthard was starting to show strong signs Brundle's peak years were coming to a close when they teamed up as lead and co-commentator in 2011 before the spilt.

Sky's best assets are, in order, Chandok in particular, Brundle (50% of him is still better than most), Kravitz and Rosberg.

Johnny Herbert in particular and Damon Hill don't add any quality to the coverage at all. Herbert does his best impression of what he thinks a failed entertainer of the 80s would have done while Hill, while passable, still rarely adds little interest. On the rare occasions he's on Rosberg is better than the two of them put together. Lazenby is entirely dispensable and still oozes zero passion for F1.

Don't even get me started on Croft. Initially I was fully in support of him moving from 5 Live to Sky as he sounded on the ball and knowledgeable, but it turned out 5 Live was his level, as audio without video allowed him to mask his many mistakes. He is completely out of his depth on live TV and if there's any good in the world then Ben Edwards' retirement from C4 will surely end up as a footnote while he waits on getting the Sky job he deserves. Edwards is one of the few genuine commentators we've got - he still races as a guest (and does very well in them) while he's commentated on single seater races as long as most of us have watched them - he's not Murray, as he's missing the loveable Murrayisms, but he's probably the best motorsport commentators around (and from a technical perspective, as much as I adore him, I include Murray in that).

The thing about Crofty (for me), is that he gets excited and I can forgive a commentator that.... but he will get excited for T1 then continue shouting at the top of his lungs for half the first lap by which time Martin has to jump in and talk about the actual racing that we’ve missed.

The guy has one setting: shout.

Aside from the many mistakes (which aren't too much of an issue), it's his blithering about nothing which bothers me. For example 95% of the people who watch free practice sessions will be fairly seasoned or passionate motorsport fans, yet Crofty approaches it like it's a One Show audience with inane discussions about journeys, clothes or the endless conversations of Cyril Abitebouls tattoo with little talk of anything on track or cars or technical input.
