SkyF1 vs Channel 4 coverage of F1

I gave up on Sky ages ago and watch directly via the F1 TV Pro app now.

I have to use a VPN, but seeing as I'm paying for the content I'm viewing - I feel morally justified in bypassing Skys exclusive rights to rip off UK F1 fans.

Have you had any issues with the VPN being blocked? Which country do you sub under?

You’ve been bent over there!

I only pay £16 for unlimited calls, texts a data on three. Surely if you broke down the package and thought about what you actually need you could save money?

For instance, you’d have been better off buying a VPN and pay for F1TV (in HD) than settle for SD... honestly, SD in 2021 :D!!

Hell, you could watch F1 / football in HD for free via some dodgy websites if you wanted. Not saying you should do that but the better part of £100 pcm is mental.

I've given Sky my notice of cancellation. The best they could do was £35 a month. This is around £19 a race. Too much for me now.

I had a look at NowTV but apparently they're no longer offering the season pass.

C4 would be fine, but attempting to stay up until midnight on a Sunday is a challenge.

EDIT: Just checked F1TV and that's $80 a year. I already pay for a VPN so might give that a go.

Worked for my the last couple of years. Note the list I posted earlier. You need to be in one of the countries where F1TV Pro is available for it to work - otherwise the app only allows you to see non-race content.

Also, make sure location services turned fully off. :p

F1TV via VPN is way to go, pitwall channel. Am lucky I have a friend who lives in a qualifying country to pay for it.

If I didnt have that I think I actually prefer highlights on C4 to sky.

Season pass is usually in the run up to the first race of the season so may not be available yet. I’d be surprised if they don’t offer it again.

Misschief, do you know if Sky may be thinking of renewing the £10 per month just for the F1 channel? My 2 years are now up so it's going to be £18 per month just for F1 :(

Not really sure I’m afraid, not been on the domestic side for a while now so I don’t get any updates.

I was initially dreading having to watch via the highlights on C4 but it was fine. 'Good enough' sums it up. For the live commentary I listened to BBC Radio 5 live.

Is there commentary on F1TV? Does it make a difference which country I choose to use via VPN?

I'm doing the research as well and i believe, from Googling, they use Sky's commentary (for the English feed) and it starts from when the F1 intro is shown (if you were viewing a SkyF1 feed) aka when Crofty and Martin are "in the box"; you don't get any pre/post race commentary, pitlane walks etc.
From what I can tell, they just show random shots before/after the race with "background" noise/audio.

Country seems to determine price (as well as package) and there's a few that make it ~£32 per year (for the full live feed package); but has anyone gone for those countries? Or has everyone played it "safe" with USD$80/€60 countries?
And does anyone use it on a Firestick?

Edit - Just read that the English audio feed isn't available in all countries; so that might determine which country you option to "be".

Their commentary comes from Sky. Doesn't matter where your VPN says you are, it's still Sky commentary in English. Although, there is no build up. So there's only commentary from when - on Sky - you get the F1 theme tune and intro. So, no grid walk etc. I kind of like it, you just get the sounds and shots of the grid.

I paid via Google Pay, In £s, per month. Might cost a bit more overall - but you can never count on how long a service like this will work - plus, if you cancel the winter months - it should work out cheaper.

It's a funny situation, because I'm pretty sure Liberty Media coudln't give a toss about the exclusivity deal Bernie made with Sky - and would much rather we all paid them directly via the F1 app. However they need to be seen to be honouring that deal. I'm sure Sky are moaning constantly to them to prevent UK viewers using their service.

While some may hate Sky, their lawyers do a bang up of writing a watertight contract with no doubt very large penalty fees should liberty be seen to be allowing viewing in the UK not via Sky.
