Skyrim anyone else not seeing the hype/popularity

So pretty much EVERYONE I know who owns a PC is going on about this game, and I can't for the life of me figure out why this game is so popular.

I've played Morrowind, and I just didn't get what the point of the game was.

As far as Skyrim goes, an MMORPG, without the MMO part? how does that work, from what I've seen and read about Skyrim, a game like this would benefit so much from having the online multiplayer that World of Warcraft has.

So I thought I'd offer a place for people to talk about why they dislike the game.

Lol I'm not trying to troll honestly, I'm trying to find out why the game is so popular, because I feel so far out of the loop, I'd rather play Tiberium Wars or Battlefield than Skyrim, the whole game just seems pointless to me without the online multiplayer aspect

Do you like the rpg genre? Have you played rpgs before the wow era?

If your answer is no to both questions you have discovered where the problem lies :p

Single player rpgs are best described as interactive books up to a point in which you can actually affect the storyline. Please don't start talking about book reading clubs.

I didn't buy World of Warcraft purely because I dislike the idea of paying for a game more than once lol.

So can someone explain to me, other than the graphical environments why is the game so popular, it just looks like an updated version of D&D to me.

Surely I can't be the only one who doesn't get it?

Looking at my friends the way they obsess over Skyrim, makes me think they're not too far away from cosplay in the local park

You need to play an rpg for yourself. Even if its forcing yourself to, to discover why. I have to admit I forced myself through the first 10 min of skyrim but after that I was hooked. I have that problem with most games though, takes me a while to warm up to my character.

It just doesn't appeal to me on any level, why would anyone want to pretend to be an elf or an orc going round slaying wolves and dragons and stuff. I waste enough hours on games I actually want to play, but RPG's I just don't understand, this coming from a guy who used to play Warhammer 40k

Well if you dont like RPG's, dont play them... but don't be surprised that many people do like them.

It is basically an escape for people I guess and as someone mentioned a good RPG is an interactive book where you can affect the outcome. If you just want to pwn some noobs don't get skyrim, if you want a good story to get into and an uimmersive world than get it.

I can't wait till I get it (in a month or so when initial bugs are gone and price lowered a little)

Doesn't it take over 300 hours to complete the game though, is that healthy? enough kids died playing World of Warcraft and that other game (name escapes me)

I want to like it though, I feel like a proper black sheep because everyone seems obsessed by Skyrim, and I just don't get why? take World of Warcraft for example, there is no way of finishing the game, you just do more and more quests and level up more and more, there is no "once you kill this guy, you win and unlock this" aspect to the game, maybe its because I've grown up playing games like that, that I just don't get it

It's just not for you, just like it is not for me. I hate all those unrealistic elf and dwarf games, just as I don't see the hype about Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. Yes, people think you are odd for that but so be it. Give me a realistic game/movie any time of the day. For people liking all that, more power to them.

Oh please.

That's the kind of foul sensationalism to come out of a national newspaper.

If people can't control their own lives to the extent they are malnourished, then they themselves have a clinical mental health issue. It's not the games fault.

They would find something else to obsess over and I'm pretty sure the death toll because of exhaustion etc. was all a myth.

K don't play it then if you don't think you can control yourself and play moderately. Same can be said of anything, drink water too much and it can be fatal, silly to say besides as the capitalist protestors would say, I'm part of the 99% (I can control myself and not kill myself by over playing a game) :p.

ok so you dont get it.

understandable

i like racing games and fps titles, i may give skyrim a go soon to see what the fuss is about. but i certainly wouldn't judge someone who liked it if i didn't.

your responses are quite alarming here, either you are just trying to cause a stir or are genuinely unable to see that people have different tastes.

if the game doesn't appeal to you, then play something you do like

RPGs are like films, skyrim has great voice acting and thousands of different scenarios, you're an idiot if you cant actually understand how someone could like it..
And people are obsessed with it no more than others obsessed with the latest FPS.

Most pointless thread ever. As for 300 hours??? so what, it will take me months and months to finish. Some people just like exploring and exploring and exploring, like me :)

I like it because of the setting. It reminds me of a game of thrones and lord of the rings. Theres nothing cooler than riding a horse to the next village and hearing the roar of a dragon off in the distance - only for said dragon seconds later to be flying right for you. :D

I think you need to be of the open minded and adventurous mindset in order to enjoy games like this.
