Sleep Paralysis

Never happened to me.

I do get this thing sometimes, this sudden falling sensation that lasts a split second but wakes me up and is a bit scary.

I know this is very common. Something about just drifting off and the sensors in your ears play silly bugger for a second.

I don't know the science behind it, but I hate it haha.

I used to get sleep paralysis and it was terrifying to start with but I don't get it so much now.

Eyes open, not being able to move at all and a feeling of terror/dread at the same time. Like something evil is happening. Now I just think it was because I was so scared when it happened.

I can "get out of it" by concentrating on tearing myself out of it by slowly trying to move my arm until my body wakes up within a few seconds.

Certainly in my case, Sleep Paralysis was caused by not enough sleep and irregular sleep patterns. Now I'm married and cohabiting, bedtime is more regimented :o and I haven't suffered from it at all since.

So sleep more and at regular times and it may work for you too.

I had it a few times, the worst time was when I was dreaming that I had it and then woke up in the dream and couldn't move, then I realised that was a dream and I was screaming for help inside but couldn't move or wake up, I managed to wake myself up and it was the middle of the night and I could move again. It was an awful experience and I haven't had it since thank god.

It was a bit like the film inception.

Never happen to me but I do get terrible night sweats all the time. I had a friend who said he woke up and couldn't move with what he said felt like someone kneeling on his chest. He said his house was haunted. But he was probably just having paralysis.

Only had it twice that I can recall. Once about a month ago.

First time I was in bed and woke up, felt like there was a dog right next to me breathing on me and growing. I couldn't move and remember thinking 'who let a dog in?!'. I think I went back to sleep.

Second time, recently, I was in bed having an afternoon nap and I had a feeling of urgency around getting up. I think maybe I thought someone was at the door or something but I couldn't move. I wanted to but my body would not obey. Again, I think I went back to sleep again :)

luckily I never suffered from this...sounds really scary. I think I read about the "de-coupling" of your muscle coordination from your brain when you fall asleep to avoid that you move too much when you start dreaming and basically hurt yourself. Never occurred to me that this could go wrong or be delayed when you wake up. Happy to give this experience a miss...

I've had it a few times in these past few months, generally a day or two after a binge at the weekend, not sure if there's any relation there, though.

i had it happen the other night - had it happen quite a few times before. Horrible when it does even when you have had it before it feels as if someone is pinning you down.

When it happened the other night i started panicing thinking someone was at the side of my bed holding me down - trying it to shout and i couldnt say anything.

I get this ranging anything from a couple of times a night to between 10 and 20 times a night. Every time I force myself to wake up from it by trying as hard as I can to move but as soon as I go back to sleep, I usually find myself experiencing the same thing within minutes.

It doesn't matter what I try, nothing helps. The doctors have no answers and it's really quite frustrating but I've sort of learnt to live with it.

Had it when I was younger when I took a nap during the day. First time it happened I was convinced I had had a seizure! I also used to get the whole weird presence thing as well - it was usually 2 people talking just the other side of my door.....I knew they were talking about me but I couldn't understand what they were saying. Very odd.

Exactly the same for me. Only ever happens the night after a big night out. Usually 2 or 3 times while I'm trying to get to sleep.

I can often hear my heart beat in my head very loudly or a muffling sound like when you cover your ears. I try to get my hand up to my eyes to prize them open and in my head my hands are most of the way there, but when I wake fully with a jolt shortly afterwards they're by my side and I'm just lying there as I was when it kicked off.

I recognise when it's happened now and just try to stay calm, doesn't stop it scaring the brown stuff out of me though.

Bumpy bump bump.

Had it a few times this week, disrupted sleep pattern always does it. Last night put me off sleeping though.
"woke up" face down with pillow over my face, God that was hard work trying to breathe, whilst not being able to move. Eventual one arm woke up and managed to roll slightly to free up airway. Before regaining control of rest of body.

So does sleep paralysis remove safety, as I have no doubt if that happened in normal sleep I would have just rolled or woke up. God that was so much effort just to suck some air in.

I got this quite frequently during my university days. Absolutely horrible.

Regular sleeping routine has fixed it since, though I understand if you are worried about actually sleeping!

Can't ever recall experiencing it even after big weekends on the drink. I guess it just doesn't affect some people or it may come later in life.

Sounds horrible though especially for those experiencing it weekly :(

Happened at a festival, but not the "wake up" style...

I was awake, not naturally... And I was lying down, resting for a few hours.
Brain awake / active... Body resting.

Went to get up, couldn't move. Was paralysed... Body had gone to sleep!
Played with it for a bit - Could feel the feeling/movement return by itself.

Thought it was an interesting experience.
No fear experienced tho - Sussed what it was within a few secs.
