Sleeping aids

I have struggled in the past, though recently I've had no stress at all. But I have also started (this may sound weird, but works for me) breathing in for 5-6seconds, holding my breath for some time, and then breathing out slowly.

Normally after the third one I am out cold, works a treat for me.

If I ever have trouble sleeping (which I don't normally) then just watching something on the tablet (Twilight Zone is a favorite) will have my eyes drooping within minutes.

Do half an hour to an hour of intense physical exercise, e.g. fast cycling, in the middle of the day or late afternoon.

A lot of people can't sleep because they aren't doing enough physical activity.

Rgds

I work nights so I go to the gym after work 6am->7am every day, come home set the tablet up and put something on YouTube. Works a treat always nod off :)

Earplugs as said above work amazingly well too.

Have you been tested for sleep apnea?

That is a good question - if you are feeling tired the next day then you need a sleep assessment done right away. If anyone has ever said you snore loudly or stop breathing when you sleep then the same applies.

I'm borderline - I snore like a pig but I still breath okay - if it gets any worse I'll end up on a CPAP.

Drinking, or taking anything isn't fixing the issue but working around the fault.

You need to clear your mind, and have exhausted your body enough to need regeneration.

So, remove any stress and do sufficient exercise and you'll sleep like a baby.

I can sleep in broad day light if I needed to on concrete.

warm milk and whiskey, then peaceful music all night. I find it very difficult to sleep otherwise.

do any of you use any aids for sleeping? I am having a rough time getting to sleep quickly. There nothing medically wrong and I don't want to take medication.

So does anyone know of any good natural aids to falling asleep?

By natural I assume you want to avoid pharmaceuticals. I've used herbal sleep formulas for years and they help. Check out your local health food shops and try some of them to see which works best for you. They're nothing like sleeping pills so you won't have those accompanying side effects.

But importantly, cut out caffine, and that includes chocolate, naps during the day and avoid any excessive activity before sleep time. Sitting in front of the light from a pc before bed is another no no. Try to wind down as much as possible at least an hour before bedtime.

I just had to Google asmr vids. They mostly appear to be pretty pouty young women whispering into the camera. Isn't this just fap material? (which then inevitably leads to sleep anyway?)

I just had to Google asmr vids.
It's the very opposite of fapping material; in fact pretty girls are something of a distraction. But the world is kind of split into those who know the sensations such experiences can generate, and those who are thoroughly puzzled. :-)

For some reason, some of us (many of us?) experience deeply relaxing, tingly sensations in the head during such things as hair cuts, massages, or a number of other weird and wonderful triggers. ASMR vids can be a trigger, but they're no substitute for the real thing. I don't get it as much as I used to, but it's like a kind of 'fizzing', tingly feeling that ripples around my scalp in a deeply soporific and relaxing way. It is absolutely exquisite while it lasts.

I miss my hair a lot, even after many years of increasing baldness. But I miss my trips to the hairdresser or barber even more. If I won the lottery I wouldn't buy a Ferrari, I'd buy a live-in masseur!

The only time I've ever heard anyone describing anything similar was when watching a documentary on drug taking. I've never taken anything more illicit than dandelion & burdock pop myself, but I think there's something dopamine related going on here and at it's best the sensations are far, far better than sex.

They last longer anyway. :-)

Anyway, while I'm here... some folk are just bad at sleeping. I've never had the knack myself, but one technique which I've had more success with than most is listing animals (or names or plants or computer parts or whatever) working through the alphabet from A to Z. It requires just enough effort to occupy the mind, but isn't taxing enough to keep you awake. Ambient noise of stuff like streams or rain on tin roofs work quite well for me too sometimes.

Decided to try the red light idea last night, got a decent kip but will need to try it a few more nights to see if it was a once off or a placebo or if it actually works.

Just waiting for my neighbours to come round looking for business now too.

I find reading definitely helps, and play with my hair and I will pass out in minutes.

Weirdly, half-heartedly watching tv also makes me drop off, but it doesn't really work as I wear glasses.

I used to struggle to sleep and stay asleep for years. Now I have a hot bath an hour or so before bed, then meditate for 15 minutes before I fall asleep. Really sends me off and stops my mind wandering about stupid things I used to worry about.
