Don't believe that either.

No matter how sharp a blade is, be it a ninja katana, a giant scalpel, a cleaving broadsword or a rusty hacksaw blade it's never, ever going to go through all that meat/bone/muscle/innards when 'propelled' by the swing of anothers arms.

This essay suggests that a katana could easily go through a torso, though it does also debunk quite a lot of the myths being discussed here.

Maybe its a 20 foot sword and the guy just goes in a circle really fast like a propeller...until its swinging really fast but the guy actually has no control...then someone pushes 7 blokes in front of it.

Like that bit in Michael Jackson's "Moonwalker" where he spins round in circles like Taz?

No they arent...Theyre primarily slashing weapons...Slashing strikes to the body...

The point of swords is to kill someone...Cutting off arms and stuff is movie stuff or chance occurance.

i disagree Cutting off arms and stuff is movie stuff i dont think so. a katana is a brutal weapon

It also refers to bone as soft tissue.

And, OMGWTFLOL - just look at the guy that wrote it.

Hank Reinhardt? I vote for Hank Blowhardt.

He isn't doubting the physical possibility of cutting off arms and heads - just the practicality. Real life fighting is not a choreographed procedure like WWF wrestling, the aim is to kill or disable your opponent as quickly and easily as possible.
Katanas are certainly capable of dismembering, but that isn't their specified purpose.

Sorry mate but it doesnt matter what you believe...Its fact...Go read up on swordsmanship and you will see that the preferred strokes are to the body for a kill..

Youd have to be a stupid soldier to try to cut your enemies arm off while hes trying to gut you...

But cutting off arms is so stylish.

Han: It is defeat that you must learn to prepare for.
Williams: Man, I won't waste my time with it. When it comes, I won't even notice it.
Han: Oh? How so?
Williams: I'll be too busy looking good!

Williams got his ass kicked remember.

I thought that was odd too, but there you go.

And of course the way someone looks is totally indicative of their knowledge.

Well, excuse me for bringing about the only halfway authorative link to this discussion.

You forget - I'm entirely shallow and vain in equal measure.

I didn't mean to pee on your post, for which I apologise.

The torseo cutting reference in the link is purely anecdotal, and I doubt that it is supported by anything other than being conventional wisdom.

Agreed. If i'm going to go down fighting, I'm gunna do it with style. Of course if I'm going to win I want that person to be dead as quickly as possible, Zatoichi style.

I cant believe this thread has got so long! The length of the IRC discussion also amazed me!

/walks away in disbelief

Having worked in a meat wholesalers I must side with the "impossible" point of view.

We used a bandsaw to cut pigs and lambs in two. It took some effort even with a bandsaw and that was with the head removed.

Stan :)

I know in Kendo one of the main cuts they practice is to the the top of the head, another is to cut off the opponents hand (he's not going to be so dangerous if he's got nothing to hold his sword with).

I vote no.

We need more people with sense (like yourself) in the IRC channel to fight the side of rational thought!

Sign up today and we shall slice up those who dissent (though not from head to groin, as that isnt possible :p)!
