While it has no street cred, the Fiat Panda 4x4 is cheap and cheery, easy to get in and out and can handle mild winter conditions we get.

Also, when it snowed last, a group of us were laughing at all the fake 4x4s stuck on a small railway bridge near my local
 
its not a car i would want personally however for ease of getting in and out of, Honda Jazz has to be worth a look.

edit already suggested sorry........ i am surprised you cant fit in one, my mate has one and it doesnt seem that small to me.

no argument about lack of street cred however ;)

Have you considered an EV? An i3 could work, especially if you can charge at home and it's not your only car..

When it comes to back comfort so much is in the seats regardless of ride quality (to some extent). The tyres make a difference as well - a lot of budget tyres either move around too much transferring every jolt or are too firm transferring a constant harsh contact with the road.

I also found mine (previous gen mx5) bad in the snow. Even the Elise is much more stable.
