small, cheap hot-hatch

The Handling traits of the MR2 are a heated debate, but the consensus is that their reputation isn't well deserved as long as you live within your limits. From what I've heard once you've lost it, you've REALLY lost it!
I recently bought a MR2 n/a rev 3 for £1300 but I have had to spend a lot fixing various issues with the brakes, don’t forget these cars are 10+ years old now.

The handling has been great until a few days ago when I swapped the wheels. The new ones had cheap tyres on the rear and the car has had minimal grip in the wet, oversteering round corners and struggling for grip on hill starts. Needless to say I'm getting new tyres in a couple of days. If anyone wants to know what tyre brands to avoid: don't get Triangle Talons!

Apart from that the MR2 has been amazing. It grips really well and I would definitely recommend one. You just have to behave yourself in the wet, especially on roundabouts, or you will find yourself facing the wrong way!

Lol well its not

It's a 5door family runabout if you remove the epic bhp and torques the brembos and 18's it's just a plain car

Mk4 golf in a frock and with the lcr a chib and a can of mace in it's handbag

lol you do realise that's the point of a hot hatch :p Take standard model, what some more power and extra bits on, boom hot hatch.

Of course an LCR is a hot hatch.

Why are we getting so caught up on the "Is it a Hot Hatch or is it not?" debate.

He obviously wants a second, more interesting car than a LCR. I don't really see the issue?

Not really getting caught up, just find it amusing that someone would think an LCR is not a hot hatch that's all. Nothing to bang on about though :)

I'm not really sure how any of the cars suggested are neccesarily more interesting than a Leon Cupra R.

Even something like a AX GT is going to be a far "rawer" car to drive.

Considering the OP is upset that his wife has made him put the interior back in the LCR, it seems that Raw = Good to him :).

indeed raw = good

i spend my life in a sensible vectra taxi that takes all the fun out of driving, the LCR whilst quick and superbly handling and stopping is well, not that interesting either to be fair.

in essence whatever i get is going to be stripped/caged and thrashed to within an inch of its life at every opportunity. joshy you have hit the nail on the head my friend.

Well that's hot hatch +1 then :p

A stripped 306/106/phase 1 172/Clio 16v would all be good candidates for something you can thrash about and have fun in.

tbh there are loads of choices ;)

If you're who I think you are (Rob, who used to post on uk.r.c.m) then surely you want another valver Nova, or if they've all rusted away then a modded Corsa A. The old Ford turbo crap is just to expensive to make any sense now. Xsara vts's don't feel at all fast, though the same can be said for most of the 80's hot hatches as well once you've got used to a modern one. Noisey and rattly yes, but not fast.

indeed I am :) who were you on there ?

valver novas meh. spent a good couple of hours on pistonheads last night looking at valver novas and mk2 astra gte's but to no avail. either rotten.overpriced, chavved to death or all three

I probably posted using my uni details so it would have been my real name, James Grabowski, but it was 10 years ago now. Had a crappy Nova 1.2 at the time that had the obligitory K&N fitted. I still look in occasionaly and quite a few of the same people are still posting.

I'm on the look out for a Nova with a 1.6 16v conversion (lighter and has the potential to put out the same power as a valver, but most seem either knackered or expensive. If you've never had one then a ropey 200sx s14 could be worth a punt. £1500 will get you a bad one but as long as it's got a years ticket just wind the boost up and accept it'll be completely rotten after a year.

205 GTI with a GTI6 lump shoe horned in? Let me tell you, they feel manically quick, can be picked up rather cheap and can be made to handle fanatically.

Mine was/is a spectacular car.

and totally random thing that caught my eye

a 406 3l v6 coupe of win :)

or not perhaps............

maybe a 405 mi16 if i could find one

I know it just caught my eye god their cheap 3l v6 200 bhp coupe for a grand

Leaning toasted the Vtec Y0

That said my pistonheads searching turned up the following

Escort rs2000 4x4 too slow
205 gti with various transplants hmm
Mk2 astra gte rot?
Nova with a redtop been there before and it's epic but everyone up for sale is either a grand over budget or chaffed up beyond belief and don't say corsa, the wife hates them with a passion and would stab me if I brought one home
