Need to buy some new smart/casual sort of clothes for a wedding reception this weekend, its been years since I've had to wear any sort of smart clothes.. Looking for some recommendations on makes/styles/etc.

Next. Got some nice shirts and trousers in there. Not too expensive and normally the staff wear smart clothes as well, so you could look at what they are wearing :)

It's one of these things that can be interpreted many different ways. For smart/casual I usually end up wearing T-shirt and jeans with a suit jacket, but an open necked shirt would probably be more comfortable at this time of year. For a wedding reception you might wanna wear Chinos or similar rather than jeans.

Can't advise you on makes or styles, I've no clue on either! Have a gander in M&S or House of Fraser?

Go to Massimo Dutti or Zara and pick up a nice pair of Corderoys in Navy Blue or Beige. Massimo also does some nice shirts if you're a slim fit so pick up some good ones there. Avoid Loud/Noisy patterns, the simpler the shirt the better. Elegant, Sophisticated colours and classics, nothing shiny nothing patterned. Try to avoid shirts with plackets they look cheap and rubbish

Colours to look for if you're going with navy blue trousers are light to medium blues and whites. If you're going with beige, all blues light or dark, classic black or whites but my preference is blues as it's by far the most elegant combination and looks very sharp/expensive

Get an elegant brown belt, the more understated the better. Dunhill does very good ones but they're a bit pricey.

For shoes there is no other choice then louis vuitton monza loafers in my opinion. these things ooze class and elegance. Pick up a pair in brown or dark brown, they will go with either navy or beige trousers and you'll have the right belt already from the step above.

These are the ones I'm talking about, they'll set you back around 500 pounds but well worth every penny.

500notes for a pair of shoes? really? I could buy a new wardrobe for that.

absolutely, he could pick up a couple of shirts, two trousers and a belt for the price of those shoes and from the places i mentioned even but you can't underestimate the importance of an impeccable pair of shoes. they'll turn a good outfit into crap if you walk in wearing a pair of kickers

shoes...very important. And women will pick up on this btw, the first thing they look at and notice in a man's dress sense is his shoes

for smart casual i wear trainers, jeans and a polo-shirt.

i also failed to use capital letters in this post... go me

What the hell is smart casual? I think a good t-shirt and a pair of jeans are both smart and casual. No doubt other people will think different.

500 notes on a pair of loafers is a bit mental imo. Plus I'd rather buy something made in Northampton at that price.

Zara is good and reasonable for smart/casual but pretty much all their clothes are slim-fit style, which might not be suitable for everyone!

Excellent advice.

Fixed.

Sorry mate but those look my my nan's slippers, wouldn't wear them to save my life, let alone for 500 quid...

Smart casual to me is either shirt + jeans or t-shirt + blazer.
Or maybe shirt + blazer + jeans but that's leaning toward the smart end methinks...

:) True, not quite my taste either, they also look like they would drop apart in 1 downpour.

Smart-casual? id go with shoes, trousers and shirt, no tie or jacket, maybe a decent long coat.
Where to shop? well tbh, i think the gear you find in your burtons, officers club, next, river island is a bit, well, poncy, the current styles and me don't see eye to eye. But each to their own. And no, im not an old fart, mid 20's :)
Id recommend looking at your independent shops if theres any around your area.
