Well, at least in workplaces and enclosed public places, from 06:00 HRS this morning you are no longer allowed to smoke in the workplace or enclosed public places such as pubs.

Hopefully this will be the start of a long road to us no longer being the "sick man of Europe".

It's going to, but not until 2007 :p
Here's to going out at night and not coming back smelling like you've been showering in an ashtray.

Indeed :) Wales to come also.

Most Wetherspoons are smoke free now, so visit one of them if you want a sniff into the future. Its quite a surreal experience to be sat in a pub late at night without your eyes drying out, being able to actually see the other side of the room without a faint haze coming from everyone's head.

whey hey!! I hope this does happen sooner rather an later down here.

It will be nice to go out for a night out, coming home and not smelling like you have been standing next to a bonfire for 2 hours!

I welcome the ban, despite being a smoker, but I feel sorry for some of the old guys in my club, they're just not fit enough to go and stand outside. It's a private members bar where 70% of the clientele are smokers and to have Tony Blair tell us we can't smoke is ridiculous.

1) "Tony Blair" isn't telling you anything, this was a free vote within parliament.

2) Should I choose to become a member of the "clientele" I do not want to be dissuaded by the thought of it being full of people polluting my body with burnt plant matter.

They'll just have to give up I'm afraid :)

I too welcome the ban, I'm not a smoker and will enjoy not coming home from a nightout smelling like I've smoked 20 :)

I just hope that the ban is fully inforced!

1)You know exactly what I meant, so don't patronise me.

2)Membership applications have to be approved by the commitee, and your type generally get black-balled.

These guys are very old, can't walk unaided and a fag and a dram in the club is the extent of their social lives. Is this the thanks they get for killing Gerries?

Excellent, shame we have to wait till Summer 2007 down here. Don't why they can't just do it now, especially in time for the World Cup :(

I was somewhat bemused to see that smoking would also be banned in company cars, even if it was only the smoker in the car. It's all well and good protecting others from long term exposure to second hand smoke (I remember reading that a study of bar workers showed that they had the same level of nicotine in their blood after a shift as someone who had just smoked 5 fags) but if there's no one else present what difference does it make?

Jokester
